FORGET COUNTING sheep: Weighted blankets are a far better way to get a better night’s rest.

It’s likely you’ve heard of them now — whether online, in your social feeds, or through a friend who bought one and won’t stop raving about the way it’s literally changed their life.

What are weighted blankets?

Weighted blankets are heavier-than-usual blankets, designed to aid with calmness and deeper sleep. They’re usually filled with glass beads to add that desired heaviness, and covered with a plush, minky material for softness and warmth.

What are the benefits of a weighted blanket?

The benefits of weighted blankets mainly come from the way they provide both proprioceptive input and deep touch pressure stimulation (DTPS).

To explain that in a way that makes a little more sense — proprioception essentially describes the way our mind constantly sends ‘questions’ to our body to keep it informed about our position in space. Weighted blankets answer those questions (providing proprioceptive input) which allows our brains to relax and feel more at ease.

DTPS is what specifically provides that proprioceptive input. Deep pressure has been defined as “the sensation produced when an individual is hugged, squeezed, stroked or held” with a pressure that is gentle yet firm. This sensation can increase parasympathetic activity in the body, slowing high energy functions like heart rate; while also decreasing “fight or flight” sympathetic activity in the body, reducing levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Some studies have also shown that DTPS can increase endorphin levels, releasing “happy hormones” serotonin and dopamine.

So essentially, weighted blankets can calm and soothe you — while also encouraging a more sound sleep in deeper REM states, which means you’ll wake up feeling more rested.

Which weight of weighted blanket do I need?

According to the Sleep Foundation, the general rule of thumb is that weighted blankets should be about 10 per cent of your body weight. Preferred weights though, can vary between five and 12 per cent of your own weight — you want something that provides your desired level of comfortable, while making sure you still feel safe beneath it and can move around easily enough.

Is a weighted blanket worth it?

Considering that they provide the dual purpose of keeping you very toasty and offering soothing comfort, I absolutely think weighted blankets are worth it. I have one, and have been using it religiously in the cold weather — dragging it from my couch to my bed each night and enjoying its comforting heaviness.

Who should not use a weighted blanket?

Most manufacturers recommend that weighted blankets shouldn’t be used for pregnant women, or children under the age of 10 — and with children generally, you need to be very careful about the weight of the blanket you choose. Opt for a child-sized blanket and only use the weight specified according to your child’s own age, height and weight — Calming Blankets suggests a 2.2kg blanket for children under 25kg, and a 4.5kg blanket for those who are heavier and taller.

Is it OK to sleep with a weighted blanket every night?

Weighted blankets are safe to use while sleeping, though not for everyone. Young children and pregnant women shouldn’t sleep with weighted blankets, and those with sleep apnea, asthma or claustrophobia should consult their doctors first.

Can you wash weighted blankets?

It depends on the exact blanket you buy — you should always go by the manufacturer’s specific instructions to prolong the blanket’s life.

That said, most weighted blankets feature a removable outer cover that can be safely washed on a delicate cycle, and dried laying flat. The inner part of the blanket shouldn’t be washed, as the weight is not only possibly bad for your washing machine — it could also lessen the lifespan of the blanket.

Everything to know about whisky, and the nine best bottles to buy

From Islay single malts to elegant Japanese drams and Australian tipples, too.
By Dani Maher

WHISKY MIGHT JUST be one of the most intimidating drinks on the market. For a long time, it’s been something of a boys club: A drink only to enjoyed by purists. But its sweet, oaky, and smoky flavours are deeply complex and suitable to be enjoyed by all, whether on the rocks, neat, or yes, even with a mixer.

Below, we break down all the main whisky facts you need to know, as well as the best bottles to buy — from single malt Islay scotches to Japanese and Australian drops, too.

Related: The best Australian red wines to enjoy

What are the different types of whisky (or whiskey)?

Firstly, let’s set the record straight: Yes, there are two different spellings of whisky out there: One with, and one without, an ‘e’ before the ‘y’. The only difference between these is the location in which they’re distilled: Whiskeys are from Ireland and the United States; and from everywhere else (including Scotland, Japan, and Australia) calls it whisky.

According to whisky sommelier Joel Hauer of Liquor Loot, there are five basic types of whisky: Single malt, blended malt, blended whisky, single cask and barrel proof. Here’s what you need to know about each of them.

Single malt whisky comes from one singular distillery, and is crafted from malted barley. The benefit of this, according to Hauer, is that its believed to yield more distinct regional flavours: “The limitations on movement make the drink very regional. Every distillery will have a distinct taste, and keeping things single malt makes those regional flavours come out strong.”

Blended malt whisky, as the name implies, means that several single malts from separate distilleries have been mixed together, which can yield fascinating and complex results.

Blended whisky can be quite the “wild card”, says Hauer. “Almost any whiskies can be mixed together during the creation of a blended whiskies,” meaning that it’s not just malted barley, it can be any grain from wheat to corn and rye.

Single barrel whiskies are bottled from a specific distillery cask, rather than being matured in a mix of them, which “helps preserve the casks unique flavour, as taste can differ even within the same distillery”.

And barrel proof (or cask strength) whiskies are those that haven’t been diluted after their ageing process, rather bottled directly from the cask. This means that as opposed to your average whisky which is about 35 to 40 per cent alcohol by volume (ABV), barrel proofs are much higher at 60 to 65 per cent ABV.

Is whisky a good gift?

Whether they’re a connoisseur or simply a casual enjoyer of a dram here and there, whisky makes for a great gift for any occasion. There’s a plethora of options on the market from all around the world, offering a world of flavours and profiles to enjoy, so it’s never a boring gift to give. There’s also a wide range of price points, from more affordable bottles to the really special ones that have been carefully aged for years and years on end.

How is scotch different from whisky?

In the same way that champagne cannot be labelled as such unless it is from the Champagne region of France; a whisky cannot be called scotch unless it is entirely produced and bottled in Scotland.

While scotch was originally only made from malted barley, commercial distilleries branched out to wheat and rye whiskies in the latter part of the 18th century too — creating even more offerings. Scotch is known for its distinctive smoky flavour, and is often made with grains that are malted and heated over a peat fire.

How should you drink whisky?

A whisky purist will tell you that the only way to drink it is neat — that means straight into a glass without ice. But that’s just the simplest way to enjoy it, and there are far more options. Some people like to add just a few drops of water, which can help to open up the flavour; while others like to dilute it on the rocks (with ice, that is).

You can also ease your way into the world of whisky with whisky-based cocktails, too. Mix your favourite dram with soda, ginger ale or ginger beer, coca-cola — the opportunities are endless.

Why you need to wear sunscreen even in winter, and 15 of the best facial sunscreens to buy

BAZAAR rounds up sunscreens to suit every skin type and tone.
By Dani Maher

INSTAGRAM / @LACKOFCOLORAUS

SKINCARE ROUTINES aren’t for everybody. When I say that, I mean the full-on, K-beauty-inspired, seven-step routines that require a serious time commitment and a great deal of your personal funds. There’s no problem with them, but for some people they’re simply not achievable, and that’s ok too.

But there’s one skincare-related hill I’m willing to die on: That sunscreen needs to be an unmissable step in whatever your daily routine may be. Ella Baché National Training Manager Gina Cook backs me up, telling BAZAAR Australia/New Zealand that “sunscreen is required daily”.

“Whilst we are good at applying SPF for intentional outdoor use it is the incidental sun exposure that can cause the damage,” she continues. “Think of those day-to-day errands when our skin is unknowingly exposed to harsh rays. So, layer up daily, and if you are outdoors swimming and exercising then re-apply for ultimate protection.”

And while many of us may have grown up watching ads that promote the wear of SPF, but only in a beach-related, sun-drenched setting, it’s also vital to remember that wearing sunscreen is a 365-days-per-year commitment. Even during winter, most of Australia averages UV levels of 3 and above, which is precisely the threshold at which the Cancer Council recommends wearing SPF. And yet in a recent survey conducted by leading Australian beauty e-tailer Adore Beauty, one in three respondents admitted they still don’t wear SPF daily. For that very reason, Adore Beauty will be partnering with Skin Smart Australia to offer free skin cancer checks as we head into winter. SPF365 On The Road will travel from Bondi beach to Terrigal Beach, Newcastle Beach and Coffs Harbour from May 29 to June 1, with complimentary 10 minute skin checks at each location — more on that here.

“We know that just because summer ends doesn’t mean the need for sun protection does too,” says Adore Beauty co-founder and AB LAB developer Kate Morris. “There can be a tendency to skip this crucial step in our daily routine when the weather starts to cool. But we live in a part of the world where applying sunscreen is a non-negotiable no matter the weather, or the season.”

And as skincare mogul Zoë Foster-Blake wrote in a blog post, “broad spectrum sunscreen is the most effective tool against photoaging (wrinkling, sagging, brown spots) and skin cancer you can use”. So if you’re someone still needing a little nudge, read on for all the reasons you need to ensure that applying a facial sunscreen forms part (or the entirety) of your skincare routine, as well as the best ones to add to your shelf that you’ll be more than happy to use each and every day of the year.

Should I wear facial sunscreen?

For those of us who grew up with a less-than-savoury relationship with sunscreen, applying it daily can feel like a slog, but it’s highly important.

“All sunscreen is important,” Ella Baché National Training Manager Gina Cook emphasises, “but we tend to focus on the face as it contains more melanocytes, responsible for increasing melanin which is stimulated by the sun, leading to pigmentation and freckles.”

The good news is that there’s no longer a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to sunscreen — there are now plenty of options targeted for facial use rather than the all-over-body ones of your youth. Cook adds that ‘skinscreens’ — those that blend skin-loving ingredients like antioxidants with SPF sun protection — are a great choice to nourish and nurture your skin, and personally recommends the Ella Baché Active Face Great SPF50+ Lotion.

“With our complexions copping the brunt of daily environmental aggressors it is important to invest in a good quality facial SPF that combines the best of suncare and skincare,” she continues.

How much sunscreen should I apply on my face?

You might have seen on social media, the ‘two finger rule’ being touted as the ideal amount of sunscreen to apply to your face, ears and neck — and that’s true! But if you’re looking for a more concrete amount, Cook says a teaspoon should do it.

“As a general rule of thumb, a teaspoon is the perfect amount for facial application, applied over your daily moisturiser in sweeping motions or with a make-up brush, it will ensure even and full protection coverage,” she explains.

Also be sure to re-apply frequently — every two hours or after swimming, sweating or towelling.

What is the best sunscreen for the face?

We’re now spoiled for choice when it comes to the options available to us in the world of facial sunscreen. So if you’re looking to narrow down your shortlist, Cook advises to focus on all the benefits they offer.

“When looking for the perfect sunscreen, we want to ensure the product focuses on the benefits of SPF protection and skincare nourishment,” she says.

“Look for an SPF that is 30+ or 50+, and is antioxidant rich and able to offer the skin another level of protection, whilst ingredients such as pentavitan and cocoa butter hydrate and nourish.”

22 cleansing products to try, plus everything you need to know about face cleansing

From the types of cleansers to invest in to techniques for squeaky clean — but never stripped — skin.

SERUMS, MASKS, and moisturisers might get a whole lot of love online for their much-needed positions in a skincare routine, but they all mean nothing if you don’t have a clean base to start with. We’re talking cleansers: if your skin isn’t balanced and washed clean of impurities before you start applying all those later steps, you may as well throw in the towel.

Fortunately, cleansing isn’t too complicated — though there are a few cleansing myths around that you should be wary of (no to hot water, yes to double cleansing). So we’ve done the hard work for you and collated everything you need to know about facial cleansing in one convenient place, from recommended products to tips and tricks. You can thank us later.

What is the best face cleansing routine?

The best face cleansing routine is one that is performed regularly — night and day.

“Regular cleansing is paramount for all skin types, particularly at night time to remove oil, sweat, dirt, pollutants, makeup and SPF build up that occurs throughout the day,” explains Kimberley Conboy, endota skin specialist. “A common misconception is that a morning cleanse isn’t necessary as you aren’t wearing makeup, but  it’s important to cleanse your skin in the morning as your skin is its most dehydrated while we sleep.”

You should wash your face with tepid water (that is, neither hot nor cold; lukewarm) for the best results — hot water can actually dry your skin out more. Double cleansing is a great technique for ensuring thoroughly cleansed skin, especially at the end of the day — more on that later.

Which type of face cleanser should I use?

The type of cleanser you use — gel, cream, foam, balm, oil — depends on your skin type, as well as personal preference. Drier types should opt for a cream, balm or oil, or even a gentle gel. Those with oilier skin may be better suited to gels or foams — but they shouldn’t be afraid of oils and balms, because contrary to what you might think, they won’t actually leave your skin feeling oily. It’s actually important not to strip the skin of all moisture

“Over-cleansing can leave skin feeling dry, tight and out of balance, so it’s vital to ensure your cleanser is suited to your skin type — endota’s moisture restore cleansing milk is perfect to quench dry or dehydrated complexions, yet is also light enough to nurture normal skin,” explains Conboy.

Wondering which one might be for you? Read on for all of our cleansing recommendations.

What is double cleansing?

There’s no trick to it — it’s just what it sounds like. Inspired by Korean, Japanese and French skincare rituals, double cleansing is the process of washing your face twice to ensure your face is properly set up to absorb all the goodness you slather on — serums, moisturisers, creams, etcetera.

According to MECCA, the first step “involves purifying your face of makeup, pollution, dirt, debris, even sunscreen — basically anything found in your pores and on the surface of the skin at the end of the day. The second step ensures anything that wasn’t removed in the first step is washed away (including leftover cleanser residue)”. They note that cleansing oils, balms and milks are best for your first cleanse, as they really lift out the build-up from deep within the pores. Your second cleanse can be with a gel or foam cleanser which will leave you with that squeaky clean (but not stripped) feeling. Et voilà! You’ve nailed the double cleanse.

Why the Macbook Pro M2 Pro is the ultimate laptop for multi-taskers

From increased battery life to efficient performance — here’s everything you need to know about Apple’s latest innovation.
By Dani Maher

ALL IMAGERY COURTESY OF APPLE

APPLE MAY be best known for its iPhones, but as history goes, it’s first ever product was a computer built in Steve Jobs‘ garage. So it’s unsurprising that its computer offerings still remain one of its biggest product categories — and among those computers, the Macbook Pro reigns supreme, accounting for 54 per cent of laptop sales.

Since it’s inception in 2006, the Macbook Pro has evolved rapidly, but one thing remains constant: Its proclivity for innovation. 17 years on from the very first Macbook Pro, the latest offerings from the line are the Macbook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch — both of which feature the new M2 Pro chip.

The M2 Pro chip is built with industry-leading processes and architected with more CPU and GPU cores, more on-package unified memory, and more memory bandwidth than its predecessor. What does that mean in plain English? Essentially, you can expect a more powerful and speedy performance for more efficient multitasking, with even better battery life and power efficiency than ever before.

And what else should you expect from the new Macbook Pro M2 Pro? Display-wise, things have never been slicker. The Liquid Retina XDR display brings HDR to life with incredible detail in shadows and highlights across imagery and videos — so you can experience deeper blacks, brighter whites, and more vibrant colours.

Connectivity-wise, there are an array of ports to make work and personal usage convenient. On one side, you’ve got an SDXC card slot (which supports SD 4.0 standard) for photographers; a Thunderbolt 4 port to charge the system, charge external devices, and support DisplayPort video; and an HDMI port for convenient connection to TV or HDMI displays sans extra adaptors. On the other, there’s a MagSafe 3 port for fast charging; two more Thunderbolt ports; and a 3.5mm headphone jack for those who prefer to go wired.

On the battery front, as mentioned, thanks to the M2 Pro chip the Macbook Pro is more power-efficient than ever before — with up to an additional hour of battery life compared to the previous generation. The 14-inch model supports up to 18 hours of video playback or 12 hours of wireless web browsing; while the 16-inch model offers up to 22 hours of video playback or 15 hours of wireless web browsing. Both iterations support fast charge of up to 50 per cent in just 30 minutes.

There’s plenty more to love, too: A re-engineered keyboard featuring Touch ID; studio-quality microphones with voice isolation for clearer FaceTimes and video conferencing; a six-speaker sound system; and a 1080p FaceTime HD camera. For even more detail, you can discover all the nitty-gritty bits at the Apple website.

From $3,199

If you’re after a new laptop for work and play, look no further than the new Macbook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch, powered by the M2 Pro chip. Experience crystal clear displays, increased battery life and truly impressive performance — no matter how much you throw at it.

How much should I spend on a swimsuit?

The price range of swimsuits can vary quite extremely, and it’s up to you to decide what feels like the right amount to spend. If you don’t mind spending a little extra for good quality, investing in a brand that offers thoughtfully-produced and sustainable designs often means you’ll get greater longevity from your swimsuit too, saving you money in the long run.

Should you wash your swimsuit after every use?

If you want to extend the life of your favourite pair of swimmers, be sure to follow the care instructions on the label and wash after every three to five wears. If you’re swimming in salt or chlorinated water, you should definitely at least rinse and air dry your togs after every wear, as these types of water can break down the elasticity of your swimmers.

What type of luggage is most durable?

ABS luggage, made from a thermoplastic (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) is the lightest option on the market, and often the cheapest. The most durable is aluminium, though it’s on the heavier side. And if you want a good in-between, polycarbonate is a good mix of durable-yet-lightweight.

What are the best pieces of luggage to buy?

Luggage sets — consisting of multi-sized, matching suitcases and bags — can be a great value investment, but it can also be worthwhile to build out your own suite of travel essentials. To ensure you have all your bases covered, we’d recommend investing in the following:

  • Large check-in suitcase: Soft or hard-shelled, you want a suitcase sized between 25 to 32 inches to cover you for anywhere between two to four weeks of travel.

  • Carry-on suitcase: Invest in a standard 22″ x 14″ x 9″ suitcase to get you aboard a flight for shorter trips where carry-on is all you require.

  • Weekender and/or duffel: If you’re only going away for a handful of days, a decently-sized weekender or duffel bag is the perfect size for your clothing and toiletries essentials.

  • Tote or backpack: Ideal for accompanying your carry-on luggage, a tote (preferably zippable) or backpack can fit all your essentials, and are ideal for day trips while travelling. A hip bag (AKA bum bag) is also great for carrying the bare necessities (and they’re back in trend, no longer reserved for daggy travel dads).

  • Toiletries bags: It goes without saying, you need somewhere to store all your makeup and skincare — we rounded up the best beauty bags here.

  • Packing cubes: You’ve likely seen them all over Instagram, but packing cubes are designed to compartmentalise your luggage to make packing less of a hassle. July and Antler both have great options.

Is hard or soft luggage better?

Soft-shell luggage has more give, and can more easily be compressed into tight spaces if that’s a concern (and it can also be easier to over-fill, if you’re a heavy packer). Meanwhile, hard shell suitcases can be better at protecting fragile contents, and are considered somewhat more secure as they can’t easily be torn into. At the end of the day, it comes down to your preferences and needs — as well as the aesthetics and design features you prefer in your luggage.

The best flower delivery service for you is the one that’s best suited to your gifting needs. Things to consider when choosing a flower delivery service include:

  • Delivery: Do they deliver to your intended address? Do they offer same or next-day delivery, if you’re in a time crunch?

  • Variety: Does their offering of bouquets suit the occasion or person you are gifting to?

  • Prices: Are their prices within your budget?

  • Add-ons: Do they offer hampers, add-on gifts, or cards?

The perfect gift should always be tailored to the individual — you have to take into account who your mum is, and what she individually loves. That said, if your mum is the type to appreciate smaller gestures, a bouquet of flowers never go astray (find our favourite flower delivery services here), but if you’re after something more indulgent you can find our edit of luxe gifts for women here. A special piece of jewellery imbued with meaning or even a thoughtfully-chosen, quality piece of clothing offers her something to wear and think of you; or if she’s more pragmatic, opt for something useful-yet-special that she might need but not indulge in buying for herself — like a new coffee machine or luxe pyjama set.

From monogrammed luxury wares to zodiac-inspired jewellery, these personalised gifts add a thoughtful touch.
By Dani Maher

SARAH & SEBASTIAN

PERSONALLY, gift buying is a task I dread. While I’ll achieve the occasional burst of inspiration, for the most part I’m hopeless in magicking up perfect ideas to suit each of my loved ones. And it’s for that very reason that I adore personalised gifts.

Whether it’s a ring engraved with their lucky number; a planner emblazoned with their initials; or even a coffee cup engraved with their name; the option to personalise these presents adds a touch of thoughtfulness that your loved ones are sure to cherish.

So, behold: the best personalised gifts to give this year (with nary a cheesy photo gift in sight).

There’s a wide assortment of designs to choose from to suit any personality or style (personally I adore the tarot-esque zodiac options), and they can then be customised to your liking. Inside, the layout is simple yet effective, with weekly layouts for planning your days. Who said practicality was boring? Certainly not us.

What items can you personalise?

More and more brands are offering bespoke personalisation and customisation options, so there’s actually a great deal of items you can have personalised as a gift. Think journals and diaries from Papier, jewellery from Mejuri, luggage from July, phone cases from The Daily Edited, reusable drink holders from frank green, and even luxe pet accessories from Gucci.

What are some thoughtful gift ideas?

The most thoughtful gifts are those which show how well you know the recipient — what they like, what they want, what they need. Personalised gifts are always a thoughtful option, because who doesn’t like something that seems as though it was made just for them?

Which luxury brands offer personalisation?

If you’re after a luxury gift with a personalised touch, there are plenty of places to turn. Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Burberry, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Chanel, and luxury jewellers including Cartier and Tiffany and Co all offer gift personalisation services on select goods.

Is jewellery a good gift?

Jewellery is always a great gift to give. There’s something for everyone: for the minimalists, a simple yet elegant solid gold ring or fine chain necklace can be worn everyday with ease; for the statement makers, a bold pair of earrings or cuff bracelet with textural or jewelled elements makes for a standout piece; and for those in between.

Options abound for every personal aesthetic, so you’re bound to find something your loved ones will adore; and each time they wear their special piece, they’ll think of you.

Jewellery trends from the latest high fashion runways hint at bold statement pieces being the style of choice. Think larger-than-life hoops, chunky rings (and ring stacking galore), chokers, bursts of colour and statement chains.

That said, if you (or the person you’re buying for) are not one for a bold piece, there are still plenty of classic timeless styles to invest in. A simple quality piece of jewellery will never fail to impress: look for solid gold or 925 sterling silver that can be worn everyday with ease for a lifetime.
