The art deco designed former Department of Education building on the corner of Bridge Street and Loftus Street — just minutes from the Harbour Bridge — is the latest luxury offering in the Sydney hotel scene. The first Capella Hotels and Resorts property outside Asia (there’s s award-winning venues in Bangkok, Hainan, Hanoi, Shanghai and Singapore) recently opened on March 15, following a seven-year transformation by the Pontiac Land Group.

The revitalised historic sandstone site offers 192 chic rooms and suites, some of which have harbour views and standalone bathtubs, across nine stories. On the ground floor, Capella Sydney offers three sophisticated dining destinations with Aperture, McRae Bar and Brasserie 1930. On Surry Hills’ Albion Street, a former dilapidated boarding house has been transformed into a luxurious, thoughtfully designed and unique boutique hotel: Crystalbrook Albion. Ready to wine and dine? The Strand is the hidden gem of Darlinghurst. Having recently undergone restoration under the creative eye of Ksubi co-founder George Gorrow, the hundred-year-old boutique hotel blends classic Parisian elegance with a cool, contemporary spirit.

It is moments from some of the city’s best dining locations, but you need not leave to bounds of The Strand if you don’t wish to. The connecting bistro offers a delectable dining experience with its modern approach to French cuisine (the leek pie and baguettes with cultured butter are a must-try). Culinary Director, Nick Mahlook, curated the menu to hero seasonal Australian produce and the extensive drinks list boasts an array of French and Australian options.

Upstairs, the Strand Rooftop is a tranquil escape from the bustling William Street below. Distinctly modern with a bohemian touch, the vibrant rooftop offers a sublime vantage point to watch the sun dip behind the skyline and the city light up. At the bar, the signature drinks — the French Ginger Mule and Thyme & Basil Daiquiri — can be enjoyed along with a menu of light dishes and snacks.

When describing the hotel overall as a drink, Gorrow intended that it feel like a dirty martini; classic, with a twist.

Sydney’s seven most picturesque brunch spots

These are the most satisfying and snap-worthy brunches the harbour city has to offer. We eat with our eyes — and Instagram — after all.
By Hayley Peppin

Celsius Coffee Co in Kirribilli makes our list of cute cafes in Sydney.
Celsius Coffee Co in Kirribilli | INSTAGRAM / @celsiuscoffeeco

MOVE OVER MELBOURNE, Sydney has Australia’s hottest brunch culture. Perhaps reflecting its temperament and pretty weather, the harbour city has some of the most aesthetically-pleasing cafes, worthy of that all-important post. No shame, we all do it. But while we’re often lured by the glossy and saturated filters of a brunch joint’s Instagram — it’s sometimes too good to be true. We often psyche ourselves up for a dazzling and delicious mid-morning meal, to only feel disappointed by the most importance aspect: the food. And nothing feels worse than a dissatisfying Sunday hangover brunch.

First and foremost, our national cuisine of yes, brunch, should be respected in both form and flavour — with its presentation a very close second. We do eat with our eyes after all! Therefore we’ve compiled a list of some of the cutest & Instagrammable cafes across Sydney to not only please your followers but your tummy.

Harrys Bondi

Bondi

While Speedos cafe in Bondi may have been named the most “Instagrammable” cafe in the world back in 2019, at BAZAAR we like to highlight some of the more under-the-radar but equally snap-worthy spots. Harrys is one of them. Still with a large enough following to recognise its popularity, this North Bondi brunch joint is just a stone’s throw from the main attraction — the beach — with a minimalist fit-out the Scandis would approve of. Founded back in 1997, this institution serves both loyal customers and the masses of tourists nutritious and locally-sourced meals. From vegan and gluten-free chia puddings with puffed rice granola to feta and quinoa fritters with paprika and garlic labneh; you’ll feel both virtuous and fulfilled.

2/136 Wairoa Ave, Bondi Beach NSW 2026

Mayflower Sydney

Darlinghurst

The Mayflower proves that plants not only belong in vases — but on one’s plate. This high-end cafe may appear to be expensive with its onyx stone tables, elegant pendant lights and yes, array of floral fixtures … but you’d be the wrong. The affordable Darlinghurst cafe is housed in a stunning heritage building, which was once an Art Deco florist. And wanting to respect its “original roots,” co-founders Christian Lee and Kevin Ly seemingly created a space for both florals and food to cohesively mix.

Aside from florists, The Mayflower also showcases the creativity of Australian Artists and Designers in store through a number of installations and art work. But the food is equally delightful with an all-day menu, meaning you can order a decadent lobster roll at 9am if you so desire. We recommend, however, a classic croque monsieur with jamon serrano, gruyere and béchamel and a healthy dose of truffle shavings. Don’t worry, this one is sans petals.

2/303A Liverpool St, Darlinghurst NSW 2010

Celsius Coffee Co

Kirribilli

Sydney has, undoubtedly, some of the most show-stopping scenery in the country, so it only makes sense to work around it — or on top of it. Celsius Coffee Co literally does that as diners indulge in both unparalleled views and delectable food. But unlike some of the more modern and palatial harbour-side venues, the Kirribilli joint offers some of that beach shack charm with cozy and rustic wooden interiors. Its wharfed windows can also be fully opened so one can smell that salty sea breeze — and salivate prior to their meal. Speaking of which, foodies should opt for Celsius Coffee Co’s legendary eggs Benedict, while influencers should take note of their Instagram-friendly waffles with berries and edible flowers.

Commuter Wharf, Holbrook Ave, Kirribilli NSW 2061

The Botanica

Vaucluse

Self-described as a “food and lifestyle destination,” The Botanica has been luring ladies to Vaucluse since 2018. But it’s only understandable. This paddock-to-plate cafe/restaurant is surprisingly sustainably-minded despite its glossy pink exteriors. The Botanica not only utilises Australian ingredients from local producers but also from its very own herb and veggie patches.

One can spend an afternoon frolicking through and sampling The Botanica’s lush gardens before giving it a taste test indoors. But like the changing seasons, the menu continually changes to suit fresh and seasonal ingredients. Executive chef Perry Hill, who previously worked at London’s famed River Cafe, said dishes are dictated by produce throughout with most meals limited to “three-or-four ingredients per plate.” But to give you a literal taste, anticipate meals like Hot Smoked Ora King Salmon and Ataif Arabic Pancake, stuffed with apricots, créme patissier and drizzled with star anise lemon rose syrup. Definitely one spot to don your most feminine and floaty fits.

2 Laguna St, Vaucluse NSW 2030

La Renaissance

The Rocks

Despite being a patisserie, La Renaissance isn’t a classic grab and go scenario. Instead, this particularly palatable French cafe encourages customers to sit and enjoy the bustling and energetic atmosphere of The Rocks. Hardly a dilemma given their terrasse-style seating arrangements. The family business was established back in 1974 has gained a reputation as being one of the finest patisseries in the country. Choose from traditional cakes, pastries, savouries and macrons or nourishing filled baguettes. Personally, you can’t go amiss with an almond croissant. A sweet start to your day.

47 Argyle St, The Rocks NSW 2000

The Boathouse

Palm Beach, Shelly Beach, Balmoral Beach, Patonga

It’s the North Shore’s fabled food fixture for a reason. The Boathouse has multiple locations scattered across Sydney’s beaches, allowing for morning dips before sustenance — or vice versa. Each venue, while waterside does have its distinct flair with Shelly’s beach set within a charming all-in-one kiosk, cafe and restaurant. Meanwhile, expect a more sophisticated beach vibe — atypical of the linen-clad folk of the Northern and Eastern shores — at their Palm Beach and Balmoral locations. Our personal favourite being the latter location, Balmoral is the original after all. There’s both indoor and outdoor dining options, but unless it’s pouring you’d be silly not to sip on that on that morning coffee literally seaside.

Balmoral Beach: 2 The Esplanade, Mosman NSW 2088

Ampersand Cafe & Bookstore

Paddington

Ampers and Cafe Sydney outdoor shot.
INSTAGRAM | @ampersandcafe

Fancy spending a long and lazy Sunday nourishing both the tummy and soul? Ampersand Cafe & Bookstore provides both brunch and books in their quaint three-storey Paddington terrace. Filled with all the cozy nooks and crannies one would expect, plus some lush red velvet armchairs and some 30,000 books —  it’s certainly the most civilised of cafe experiences. One can sip on housemaid chai while reading Jane Austen or chow down on fudgy brownies made with homemade almond meal to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Sweet tooths can also enjoy Ampersand’s pear, passionfruit and whipped ricotta French Toast, while those more savoury-inclined can satiate their senses with some slow-cooked beef cheek pappardelle. And while you’ll be paying for your meals, don’t worry — you’re not required to buy a book (but you can if you want to).

The pièce de résistance of Melbourne: The city’s best eats and drinks

There’s no shortage of great restaurants across the cultural capital of Australia, but BAZAAR breaks down those unmissable luxury experiences.
By Hayley Peppin

Beverly Rooftop. | INSTAGRAM / @sophiemcgrathpr

MELBOURNE’S DINING SCENE is undeniably next-to-none. The late great US chef, writer and broadcaster Anthony Bourdain often quoted the Australian city as a favourite foodie destination of his and Nigella Lawson is a frequent visitor. Melbourne also often features in the world’s best lists for its thriving food and beverage culture — notably, it’s coffee. But with so many delicious options in the cultural capital, it can be a challenge to choose that special occasion venue or Saturday night go-all-out experience.

We round up the best luxury bars and restaurants in the city that always eats, to help you book the best Melbourne evening yet.

Saint Hotel

St Kilda
SUPPLIED

London, Paris, New York? You’ll likely blink twice (maybe, three times for good measure) when you enter the experience that is Saint Hotel. The much-loved Saint building on the iconic bayside Fitzroy street epitomises sophistication with a swish new fit-out and fine-dining menu. Following two-and-a-half years of renovations and plenty of changing personalities (most recently, it was a night club), Saint Hotel has re-opened as a dining mecca. There’s five distinct venues for every mood, appetite (and aesthetic) with Saint Dining, Saint Bar, The Vault, Bar 54 and Stellas, as well as private and semi-private dining rooms. While its cuisine is modern Australian, Saint Hotel’s vibe recalls that of award-winning, celeb favourite restaurant Hakkasan. It’s alluringly dark and moody, yet buzzy and energetic. Electrifying background music plays and convivial chatter is most welcomed.

Saint Dining, the venue’s pièce de résistance, invites guests on a tantalising food journey within the iconic Saint Hotel atrium while enjoying an open-kitchen experience. You’ll be seated on black buttery leather banquette seats while indulging in a most hedonistic menu developed by executive chef Gary Lai. Its protein-focused and produce-driven, with most ingredients heroed on a Josper charcoal grill. Delectable entrées include the Hiramasa Kingfish Crudo and Grilled Jumbo Mooloolaba Prawn. I also thoroughly enjoyed the recommended Slow-Roasted Leek. As for mains, the Apollo Bay Crayfish Mafaldine is heavenly, and the 250g Eye Fillet but a succulent delight.

As for the other spaces, the ground floor Saint Bar offers an extensive drinks selection with creatively-concocted cocktails as well as a bites list in a smart casual setting. Also on the ground floor, the street-facing The Vault will act as a bottle shop and intimate tasting venue. Upstairs is a little retro chic fun with Bar 54, a cheeky tribute to Saint Hotel’s address at 54 Fitzroy Street and that infamous New York bar which needs no introduction. Adjacent is Stellas, Saint Hotel’s inventive cocktail bar and listening lounge which promises to provide a sensory experience like no other with huge loudspeakers by Pitt & Giblin. There’s also a rotating lineup of local and visiting DJs playing on Friday and Saturday nights. Stellas is set to open Friday, May 5. Spearheaded by General Manager Mrinal Beekarry, Saint Hotel is the all-encompassing destination to start the night which is likely to end at its 3am closing.

Beverly Rooftop

South Yarra
INSTAGRAM | @sophiemcgrathpr

Melbourne has no shortage of rooftop bars but Beverly is certainly the sexiest. Yes, it’s worthily flooded your socials feed. The new South Yarra venue is the fashion lover’s best excuse to don their most lavish sequinned ‘fit or wear a stylishly comfy white shirt, jeans and oversized sunnies. There’s no dress code, just good glam vibes. Set within Chapel Street’s latest luxury development, Goldfields House, Beverly Rooftop aims high to be the dining destination of Melbourne — and at the 24th level it certainly achieves that.

Inspired by the Instagram-friendly rooftop bars across glitzy Los Angeles, founder Cameron Northway (also of LOTI and Rocker Bondi) along with partners Marco Gattino and Lachlan Thompson have replicated the Southern Cali aesthetic — but with a Melbourne mindset. The 200-seat space, also dreamt up by creative director and model Emily Gurr in collaboration with Mitchell & Eades, is fitted with blush-pink chairs and green-and-white-striped lounges, echoing the chic furnishings of the Beverly Hills Hotel, while utilising a retractable glass rooftop. You can therefore enjoy fine dining and wining — although, we urge you to consider the cocktail menu — during Melbourne’s rain, hail or shine. Sunset Bellini’s are a Beverly signature with a clear purpose, Caffe Rosso is a caffeinated take on the classic Negroni and Mayahuel blends the celeb-fave Casamigos tequila and mezcal with the sweet kick of pineapple and lime (my personal favourite).

The menu fuses La La Land favourites such as classic crumbed mac ’n’ cheese with truffle gouda, fries and sumptuous seafood options; while using the best Australian produce. Spearheaded by chef David Ball (previously of England’s Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons and the Yarra Valley’s Dominique Portet), Beverly’s standouts include its small plates dish of prawn ceviche with jalapeño cream, as well as its larger main of marron and spanner crab pasta. For the vegan foodies, a plant-based chicken pappardelle with smoked paprika and chilli also proves popular … and tasty. Beverly may be the most talked-about Melbourne venue among the influencer scene currently, but I have a strong feeling it won’t be a fad.

Cityfields

Chadstone

Pete Dillon

Department store dining has elevated ten-fold with Chadstone’s latest indulgent foodie offering, Cityfields. Situated within one of the country’s leading shopping destinations, Cityfields is an all-day diner which could very well suit the opulent settings of Harrods or Saks Fifth Avenue. The European-style brasserie has been developed by the respected team behind South Melbourne’s restaurant and events space, Half Acre. Across a colossal two-floors, Cityfields caters to 600 hungry (and discerning) shoppers from midday to the late evening. But even if you’re not in the mood to shop, it’s a venue certainly worth checking out.

There’s a light and airy central public bar, sky-high ceilings and indoor and outdoor seating options — including a rooftop garden with panoramic views of the city skyline — to accommodate for Melbourne’s rain, hail and shine lifestyle. Designed by Pasquale Cook and Studio Manifold, the space welcomes diners with a grand entrance featuring large timber double doors and awnings, reminiscent of a Parisian brasserie. A European theme continues throughout with warm interiors, splashes of green and a vintage Murano chandelier suspended above a staircase.

Pete Dillon

The menu equally evokes authenticity and charm, while showcasing the best of seasonal produce. There’s an array of snacks and share plates to start such as olive gildas with guindilla pepper and anchovy or housemade potato cakes with goats milk yoghurt and sweet pickle relish; as well hand-made pastas and freshly-made salads. Larger meals include brasserie classics, with a variety of steaks served with French sauces, as well as the most indulgent cheeseburger. Desserts are also a Cityfields experience with a roving cart dedicated to the unmissable course. There’s daily housemate cakes, slices and tarts to choose from. Of course, everything is washed down with a thoughtfully-curated drinks and cocktail menu, guaranteed to be “the perfect Insta moment.”

Stylish stays in and around Melbourne we’re making a break for

Including The Motley, a vibrant new boutique hotel just minutes away from the MCG and nestled in the creative hub of Richmond.
By Hayley Peppin and Olivia Drake

The Ritz-Carlton has now chicly opened to welcome discerning guests from across the globe to Melbourne. | SUPPLIED

NO INTERSTATE travel trip tastes better than at the cultural capital of Australia. Melbourne, world-renowned for its coffee culture; home to the country’s largest contemporary gallery, the NGV; and host to a plethora of sporting events — is the cosmopolitan city which energises during rain and shine. We all know of its four seasons per day capabilities.

Unsurprisingly, Melbourne and its surrounds has an array of sophisticated stays to suit luxury needs or those after a charming city break. BAZAAR rounds up some of the best accomodation for when you seek a little Victorian renaissance.

The Motley

Richmond
SUPPLIED

The CBD may be the hub of Melbourne — but Richmond has the city’s heart. As one of Melbourne’s most sporty and creative areas, The Motley has celebrated its rag trade history with an unpretentiously quirky stay. Nestled on the city fringe’s Bridge Road, the 80-room boutique hotel developed by Amber Property Group has taken over a heritage building once owned by an elusive local costumier Ms Mary Parker. While moody and sophisticated, The Motley’s decor seemingly pays tribute to her and Richmond’s bohemian scene. Adorned throughout the eight-level hotel, there’s a plethora of mesmerising prints by fashion and fine art photographers Mudita Aeron and Mohammadreza Rezaniamudita Aeron as well as richly-detailed gentlemen’s club-inspired space in the adjoining ground-floor lounge.

The rooms, while comfortable and pleasantly sparse, offer plenty of luxury amenities. There’s premium pillows including those made from duck goose feathers and innovative gel to Nespresso machines with Code Black coffee. If you fancy your morning brew with some much-needed chilly Melbourne fresh air, there’s a slew of hip coffee joints just at your doorstep, such as my personal recommendation of the nearby Rowena Corner Store. But The Motley has you food and beverage covered all day, with their exceptional on-site diner Ms Parker and cocktail bar, Ms Threads. Think Modern Australian cuisine with a flavourful and cheeky twist.

Unexpectedly delicious options include bites such as Kangaroo tartare on a Vegemite cracker, as well as entrées like the Hiramasa kingfish with blackened onion ponzu and jalapenos. The mains are equally tantalising and generous, with a whole rainbow trout served with indulgent beurre blanc and the most succulent Southern Ranges Angus beef. Of course, all dishes are washed down with a huge selection of local and international wines but I urge you to try their Tiger Tommy’s cocktail — a delectable mango take on the classic spicy Marg. With the iconic MCG, Rod Laver Arena and Olympic Parks in walking distance and the buzzy Southbank precinct and city just a tram ride away, The Motley is an authentically Melbourne experience which doesn’t compromise on class.

The Ritz-Carlton

CBD

Melburnians and visitors alike can relish the crème de la crème of accommodation. The iconic The Ritz-Carlton has just opened their second Australian outpost, following their Perth launch in 2019. Soaring 80 storeys above the CBD, The Ritz-Carlton, Melbourne, offers unparalleled views across the city and surrounds — also visible from a sparkling infinity pool. From its sophisticated design and curated artwork — which honours place and indigenous heritage — as well the epicurean adventure that is restaurant Aria, the latest The Ritz-Carlton is an authentically Melbourne experience.

Atria, named after the brightest star in the southern constellation, Triangulum Australe; is set to be the city’s go-to culinary destination. The kind you’ll want to dress up for. Sitting sky-high on level 80, guests can enjoy curated cocktails and sumptuous local dishes while lapping up unparalleled cityscapes. The interiors, which pay homage to the luxe Victorian art deco era, also extend to the hotel’s signature bespoke bar, Cameo. One can expect an intimate and moody speakeasy vibe, which welcomes conviviality, curiosity … and chicness. Spearheading Atria is Executive Chef, Michael Greenlaw, whom has worked at various five-star hotels and Michelin-starred and hatted restaurants — including the legendary Bibendum in London and Melbourne’s stellar Vue de Monde. On the lobby lounge, guests can also enjoy a refined high tea experience to rival those scattered across Europe.

Other exceptional hotel amenities include the urban respite that is The Ritz-Carlton Spa, which offers six serene treatment rooms; a mindful fitness centre and yoga studio. You’ll leave The Ritz-Carlton Melbourne feeling refreshed, invigorated — and craving more. As once you stay at The Ritz-Carlton, you’ll likely never look back.

“Blending unparalleled luxury with an authentic Australian experience, The Ritz-Carlton, Melbourne is attuned to the culinary obsessions of this magnificent city. From curated, personalised moments in the Ritz-Carlton Lounge to theatrical cocktails in Cameo’s enveloping, cozy bar, culminating in exciting epicurean journeys at its signature restaurant Atria, The Ritz-Carlton, Melbourne is a new landmark for food lovers, one which we are excited to share with guests and visitors alike,” Antony Page, General Manager said.

The Royce

South Yarra

SUPPLIED
SUPPLIED

Art deco decadence meets quintessential British culture. Those after a quick trip to the UK need only stay on St Kilda Road for some old-world charm and discerning hospitality. Following two years of thoughtfully-considered renovations, luxury hotel The Royce opened its door again on Monday, February 20. Designed in 1928 by prolific Art Deco architect, Harry Norris, the former home of Rolls Royce in Melbourne retains its opulence — original cornicing and all — with elevated new offerings.

Comprising of 94 guest rooms and 18 contemporary suites, featuring freestanding baths, wallpapers imported from Barcelona and balconies that look out to the sparkling CBD and the Shrine of Remembrance, guests are transported to the hey-day of the hedonistic ’20s within the communal areas. One can sip on clandestine tipples and savour an array of signature British dishes from morning to night within the lavish Lounge.

SUPPLIED

Meanwhile, a sweeping marble staircase leads to The Royce’s Library and Ballroom, spaces reminiscent of the mahogany gentlemen clubs of London and prohibition speakeasies — with rows of bookshelves lined up with the classics and ceilings adorned with glistening chandeliers. A grand ballroom is also set to host some of Melbourne’s most lavish events and parties.

During sunny mornings and balmy afternoons, guests can also enjoy a spot of tea alfresco — or a glass of champagne (we won’t judge) — at The Royce’s terrace or within its glass conservatory, much like the summer gardens of Britain. The boutique hotel intends to bring the “golden age of hospitality back to the city” — where dressing up is only encouraged and indulgence is to be expected.

Bookings are now open and can be made by contacting: info@roycehotel.com.au

Jackalope Hotel

Unadulterated luxury set on Victoria’s favourite coastal region, the Mornington Peninsula. This extraordinary hotel is a feast for the eyes, tummy and soul. Taking its name from a mythical rabbit-like creature with antlers, this is a place that you could imagine David Lynch feeling very much at home. Chinese entrepreneur Louis Li transformed the once traditional 27-acre vineyard into an eclectic fusion of art, design, fine wine and food.

Offering 45 designer rooms with floor to ceiling windows, freestanding baths and private terraces plus upgraded suites that are coined ‘lairs’ with loft ceilings, fireplace and spectacular vineyard and pool views. The dark and moody decor showcases local pairings including custom-built furniture by designer Zuster and bathroom products by Hunter Lab.

Outside the options are endless with an infinity pool with connected bar, picturesque countryside and artworks. Housed onsite in an Edwardian homestead from 1876, is the hotel’s restaurant and bar Doot Doot Doot and Flaggerdoot with a degustation and cocktail menu to seduce and delight. May I suggest the indulgent golden mussels with foie gras foam for starter and the rich Wagyu with burned celeriac, parsley and broad beans for main.

Aside from cellar door experiences and in-room treatments, Jackalope has also recently partnered with the lavish and recently launched Alba Thermal Springs for an experiential escape. Packages include transfers to the premium wellness retreat and access to Alba’s Thermal Springs Bathing and Alba Self-Care in room ritual. Wine, dine, unwind.

Ours Fitzroy

Fitzroy

ADRIAN BONAVENTURA

It’s no Melbourne secret that Fitzroy is the cultural capital’s most effortlessly cool neighbourhood. A hub for creatives, foodies and style taste-makers — so it’s only fitting interstate visitors or Victorians after a little cultural renaissance stay in an ultra-cool urban digs. Enter Ours Fitzroy, an apartment, shopfront and gallery space founded by proud Melburnian Zane Curwen-Walker.

The mid-century sanctuary, located on the buzzy main drag of Johnson Street, has been expertly curated and crafted courtesy of Curwen-Walker. An amateur furniture maker, who previously leant this design eye to the The Convent Gallery in Daylesford, Curwen-Walker has created and lovingly restored much of the furniture in the one-bedroom apartment. It also celebrates local and emerging Victorian artisans through fixtures, fittings and scattered pieces.

The stylishly sustainable stay is available for two people and generally only for the weekend — meaning you can spend Friday to Sunday exploring (and savouring) Melbourne’s trendy inner-north. Alternative days are possible upon request, however. Additionally, a staycation at Ours Fitzroy also includes brunch on the house from the popular nearby Terror Twilight cafe. While Melbourne has plenty of pockets to traverse through, Fitzroy and its neighbours of Collingwood, Carlton and Brunswick should be top of the travel hit list.

Eight of Sydney’s favourite Mexican eats

Get your spicy flavour fix — and by spicy, we don’t just mean the food. Hello, jalapeño margaritas — at the best Mexican restaurants in Sydney.
By Hayley Peppin

Calita in Bondi packs a flavour punch with the best Bondi views | INSTAGRAM / @calitamexican

IF THERE’S EVER a place to get in a Mexicoma outside the vibrant country, it’s in Sydney. It’s something about the city’s sunshine combined with its salty beach culture that calls for our quench to be refreshed by way of cocktails — margaritas to be precise — and our tummies to be filled with light, punchy and fresh ingredients. And Mexican couldn’t be a more satisfying solution to nourish our summer bodies.

In recent years, Sydney’s Mexican scene has flourished. What was once a few clichéd restaurants sporting all the Tex Mex frills and trills and atypical burritos, has diversified to a strong and modern array of authentic Mexican cuisine. Don’t worry this grown-up edition of restaurants does include fan favourite appetisers and meals like guacamole and quesadillas but with a few Mexican twists … which of course includes a mountain of chilli and pop of jalapeños.

Spice up your summer Saturday with our eight favourite Mexican joints across the harbour city.

El Primo Sanchez

Paddington

INSTAGRAM | @elprimosanchezsydney
INSTAGRAM | @elprimosanchezsydney

One of latest inclusions to Sydney’s vibrant Mexican scene is El Primo Sanchez. “Named for the long-lost cousin who always leads you astray,” El Primo Sanchez is a Mexican cocktail bar right next door to boutique Paddington hotel Oxford House. Spearheaded by head chef Alejandro Huerta, the menu reflects the punchy flavours of Mexican street food while fusing unexpected ingredients. Expect a sumptuously modernised patatas bravas featuring chorizo con papas as well as tacos filled with salsa guacamolada and kangaroo meat. The flavour explosion continues with creatively concocted tequila and mezcal and cocktails and the dance-floor is only steps away. El Primo Sanchez even has a pint-sized karaoke room beneath a canopy of disco balls. It’s a little fun, a lot of fiesta — and fabulously tasty.

27-33 Oxford St, Paddington, Sydney

El Loco

Surry Hills

We’d be loco not to include this one. Considered one of Merivale’s best, this casual and colourful venue is attached to a Surry Hills pub and often radiates the raucousness of an authentic Mexican bar. Visit for the drinks, their Margarita slushie is a summer stand-out, and take delight in the food … and reasonable prices. El Loco’s signature dishes, however, include its “tacos secretos,” which like the name presents a variety of “secreto” tacos. Each filling is a flavourful surprise and just $7 per taco.

64 Foveaux Street, Surry Hills & 111 Sussex Street, Sydney,

Casa Merida

Potts Point

Housed in perhaps the most unexpected setting, this Mayan-inspired eatery is full of surprises. However, the Potts Point terrace isn’t completely left-of-centre given Casa Merida’s co-owner Pablo Galinda Vargas was after a space somewhat reminiscent of the grand European-style architecture of Merida — once one of the wealthiest cities in the world. The 70-seat fine diner, which only opened in October, offers highly-specialised Mexican spirits which “can be found nowhere else in Australia.” This includes imported mezcal from Indigenous communities in Mexico. Casa Merida plates up a plethora of traditional dishes from the Yucatan Peninsula — including cricket-laced guacamole, potato gratin with guajillo chillies, and octopus tacos. But co-owner Pablo Galinda Vargas recommends the cochinita pibil (Mayan-style slow-cooked smoked pork) for any Mayan newcomers.

1/5 Kellett Street, Potts Point

Mejico

Pitt Street, CBD

Mejico is a tasty treat, twice-over. Following Melbourne’s 2020 lockdown, the team behind Mejico opened yet another in the Victorian capital. But personally, we still think the OG joint on Pitt Street is the place to be. Founded back in 2013, Mejico Sydney combines the flavours of Mexico with Latin America, serving up market fresh ingredients — without the casualness of street food dining. Try their smashed avo (or guacamole) — which is literally smashed on your table — or their Wagyu Beef Rump with jalapeño jus and burnt pepper. Diners with a penchant for bottomless style meals can also indulge in Margarita Mondays and Sangria Saturdays for special beverage deals.

105 Pitt Street, Sydney

So Cal

Neutral Bay

SoCal is just so good. The North Shore eatery has one of Sydney’s best beer gardens and, as the name suggests, is a fusion of Cali and Mexican culture. Founded by the owners of Bondi Hardware and The Botantist, Hamish Watts and Ben Carroll began their beach chic joint following a Californian surfing trip together. The result? A light and airy venue with a MexiCali menu designed to share. Expect fresh flavours and seafood like kingfish tiradito alongside ‘low’n’slow’ smoked meats, house-made sauces and freshly indulgent sides. SoCal also, gratifyingly, has a 2am license — so you don’t have to guzzle down the margs during a later seating service.

1 Young Street, Neutral Bay

Tequila Daisy

Barangaroo

Barangaroo is undoubtedly one of Sydney’s most buzzing waterfront dining precincts; and in October they added their next flavourful addition, Tequila Daisy. Initially, teasing locals with takeaway tacos during lockdown, the bright taqueria has been serving up both authentic tunes — yes a full trumpet and guitar Mariachi band plays some evenings — and delicious food. The 200-seater packs a flavour punch harmoniously marrying traditional Mexican flavours and cooking techniques with freh and local produce. There’s an assortment of tacos to choose from and a variety of banquet-style meals for groups or those who just want a little bit of everything. We understand. Tequila Daisy, whose name and motif is a reference to the Spanish translation of “Margarita” also has an extensive drinks menu with over 100 mezcals and tequilas to choose from. Dangerous, but oh so good.

Tequila Mockingbird

Paddington

It’s a Paddington institution with a knack for tequila. To be precise, 34 different types of tequila from across the globe — but the Five Ways venue is anything but your average drinking den. Blending Latin American cuisine with the flavour hits of Mexico, this hybrid restaurant and bar produces some of the most contemporary and cutting-edge Latino meals while utilising classic Aussie ingredients. A raw bar delivers the surf with ceviche, hiramasa kingfish tiradito and wagyu beef tartare. While on the turf side, diners can enjoy alpaca empanadas or lamb shoulder with red chimmichurri. And when Sydney blesses us with that glorious sunshine, the two-story 200-seater venue opens its delightful courtyard and garden — as well as retractable roof — for optimal sundown cocktails.

6 Heeley Street, Paddington

Calita

Bondi

There’s no greater place to chow down on some succulent seafood than at Bondi. And thankfully, Calita offers both world-class scenic views and the freshest local Mexican-style seafood. The teeny 26-seat space offsets luxe beach bar vibes both aesthetically and with its small yet sophisticated menu. Inspired by the Baja Peninsula, expect an assortment of tacos as well as larger mains like blue swimmer crab tostadas and fiery chilli tiger prawns. Those with a sweet tooth can also indulge in homemade churros with an Australian spin — a complementary macadamia and Dulce de leche ice cream. On the drinks front, Calita offers four kinds of Margaritas, a refreshing and sweet mango one included, to aptly wash down the spice.

How Australians can travel in style this Euro summer

From updated visa requirements to Euro pricing consideration — and even the best Premium Economy seating, courtesy of Emirates’ new luxury offering.
By Hayley Peppin

BRIGITTE BARDOT IN 1969

EACH YEAR, thousands of sun-chasing Aussies abandon our brutal winter for a European summer. Or, as I like to call it Aperol season. But walks along the Seine, island-hopping in Croatia and those rite of passage visits to Harrods might look a little differently this time compared with pre-pandemic travels. The classic international holiday has not only drastically increased in price — our hunger for travel has never been greater since deprivation— but sees a few new visitor rules, such as the ETI’s visa, come into effect.

On the plus side, long haul flights have become that much more comfortable with the world’s most luxurious premium cabins being launched in Australia, courtesy of Emirates. The swish new offering is even touted as on par with business class in “some other airlines,” so you can travel in style without compromising on that clifftop stay at Caruso, A Belmond Hotel on the Amalfi Coast. BAZAAR breaks down all the Euro travel advice to ensure you live out your Euro fantasies with zero disruption.

How expensive is a European summer holiday in 2023?

The travel advice is simple: don’t procrastinate, book now. European summer holidays have never been more expensive for Australians than in 2023, with fares almost 50 per cent higher than the same period last year — and increasing. The average price for a return economy flight from Australia to top Euro destinations like London or Paris has skyrocketed to $2,571, according to flight comparison website Kayak.com.au. For perspective, air fares are now 63 per cent above pre-pandemic flights.

The Guardian reports that the hefty 2023 increase shouldn’t come as a surprise — with most carriers hoping to financially recover from COVID-19 related losses while mitigating high fuel costs. And with our lust for travel at an all-time high, they’re able to confidently set such air fares.

PEXELS

“Sadly what has happened since Covid is that travel has gone from being something very democratic that just about anyone earning even a modest salary could afford to being a plaything of the elite or for people paying huge amounts of money just to see loved ones,” David Beirman, an adjunct fellow at the University of Technology Sydney, told The Guardian.

He continued: “Maybe by 2024 or 2025 people will be a bit more choosy, less eager to travel, and prices will come down but at the moment it’s very much a sellers market and airlines are, rightfully or wrongfully, taking advantage of that.”

As for accomodation, hotels in Europe have become that much more expensive this year as well due to soaring energy prices. Between May 2019 and May 2022, the average hotel room rate rose 23 per cent in Italy, 21 per cent in Ireland, 17 per cent in Spain and 12 per cent in the UK, reports Traveller. And it’s expected to increase even more this summer. Australian travel industry experts anticipate a 25 per cent increase in hotel prices in the top summer destinations of Greece and Croatia in 2023 with tour operators planning trips around Turkey facing between 20 percent to nearly 50 per cent increase in room rates, in euros.

How to have an affordable European holiday in 2023

If you’ve got the Euro travel bug but are on a budget, don’t worry you can still have your “revenge holiday” but with a few considerations. Firstly, be mindful of your arrival destination as while Lisbon may average a costly return ticket of $2,963 during peak summer — Frankfurt is a more affordable. According to the Kayak booking data, the German city is the cheapest European city to fly into from Australia with an average return fare of $2,371 during the June to September period.

HARPER’S BAZAAR ARABIA

More generally, travellers on a budget should consider visiting lesser-known cities and countries than some of the notoriously expensive tourist hotspots. It’s advised they also book a solid itinerary prior to departure, rather than the classic Aussie mentality of ‘winging it’ upon arrival. Time Out recommends holidaymakers check out Kraków, Poland; Riga, Latvia; Český Krumlov, Czech Republic; Bucharest, Romania; Belgrade, Serbia; Kaunas, Lithuania; Zagreb, Croatia; Argos, Greece; Marsalforn, Malta; and Sofia, Bulgaria as some of the most interesting, delicious and affordable locations on the Continent this year.

But if your heart (and tummy) desire Eiffel Tower views or pasta alla carbonara, perhaps consider forfeiting a Euro summer altogether for the off-peak ’shoulder season.’ The more affordable period sits on the cusp of peak season, either before summer during April or May — or after it in September or early October. Prices tend to rise during school breaks and summer holidays. As travel blogger Jen of The Soloist wrote to an Instagram post: “One of the absolute BEST times to travel is during shoulder season anyways!!”

She continued: “‘Shoulder season’ is an off-peak period when a destination has less crowds, lower prices, and milder weather,” she continued. “It’s a great way to get a more authentic experience, while spending less for the same fabulous hotel rooms!”

You can also expect airfare prices to lower during shoulder season, with the biggest drops at some of the most popular destinations. This could mean a potential upgrade from your usual flight cabin, such as Emirates’ new Premium Economy.

Best premium economy seats

If you’re dreaming of business class but still need to save on spending money, Emirates may be your happy travel medium. Long known as one of the world’s best carriers, Emirates has recently launched its luxurious Premium Economy seating following an eight-year multi-million-dollar refurbishment. On April 19, the airline introduced its daily Airbus A380 Premium Economy services from Melbourne to Dubai, making it the the fifth city on the Emirates’ network to offer the upgraded economy seating options. This follows successful Sydney’s debut last December.

Now, if you’re wondering whether there’s much of a difference between Economy and Premium Economy, there is. Emirates is comparing the new offering to business class cabins of the late ’80s and early ’90s, with its 56 Premium Economy plush leather seats unusually sitting at the front of the plane. It’s laid out in an ergonomic and spacious 2-4-2 configuration, meaning couples won’t have that awkward third wheel (it happens) — and families can comfortably stretch out in the aisle row. There’s almost a metre of legroom, in-seat charging points, a generous 43-centimetre entertainment screen, and a walnut wood-finished side cocktail table; much like the sophisticated business class aesthetic.

As for on-flight dining, let’s just say you won’t want to pre-purchase anything to take on board. Passengers are treated to champagne on arrival (only the best way to start a trip, right?), and nthoughtfully-curated meals using seasonal ingredients served on Royal Doulton china tableware with stainless-steel cutlery. There’s also a dedicated Premium Economy crew with three bathrooms for the 56-seat cabin, so you won’t have to line up during the evening.

Premium economy passengers will also get priority boarding, plus a generous 35 kilograms of checked luggage. Since tickets went on sale on June 1, 2022, Emirates says there’s been “significant demand” for the new cabin, exceeding expectations and forecast. In terms of Premium Economy pricing, you’re looking at around $2,700 each way from London via Dubai, with “shoulder-season” tickets around $2000 each way. It’s definitely a taste of flying luxury at a fraction of the business cost.

“This is an exciting period for Emirates in Australia, with Melbourne and Sydney sitting at the forefront of Emirates biggest investment in cabin redesign to date,” Barry Brown, Divisional Vice President Australasia at Emirates, said.

“We have a strong commitment to Australia, as one of our most important markets on our global network. Alongside continued increase of operations as we make a strong rebound, we are committed to offering Australians more choice in how they travel, and look forward to offering travellers between Melbourne an exceptional new experience.”

Bookings can be made on emirates.com, the Emirates App, or via both online and offline travel agents.

What is the ETIAS visa?

Australians travelling to France, Denmark or even Croatia (one of the latest countries to join the Schengen Area) will soon need to apply for a visa waiver program. Coming into effect next year, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System or ETIAS will require Australia and more than 63 other non-European Union countries to apply online for pre-screening. For clarity, the ETIAs is not a visa — but intended to waive the requirement for it. The new mandatory pre-travel authorisation is a largely automated IT system created to identify any security risks, much like the eligibility of travellers heading into the US.

Travellers can access the ETIAS application online, which is said to take around 10 minutes to fill out. It’ll ask applicants to fill out standard contact details, including full name, address, passport information, as well as the first EU country they intend to visit. There will also be questions about criminal history, drug use, human trafficking and previous European travels. The link will be made available next year, with the application to cost $11 for each Australian applicant aged between 18 and 70. The ETIAs is permissible up to 90 days, with longer travel in the Schengen Area requiring Schengen Visa.

Four hours from Sydney, discover the romantic getaway of your dreams: The best resorts in Fiji for couples

Fiji should be at the top of your wish list when it comes to romantic destinations.
By Dani Maher

ALL IMAGES SUPPLIED

I FIRST experienced Fiji a child, travelling alongside my family on a holiday in the early 2000s. Through my nine-year-old eyes, I saw it as a far-off oasis, replete with sun, sand and coconuts aplenty, brimming with exciting marine life and adrenaline-inducing activities galore. But when I visited it again more recently, this time with my partner, I saw it through a renewed lens. The Fiji I rediscovered is one that is so close — a less-than-four-hour flight from Sydney — that it’s an almost-local getaway, offering all the beautiful beaches and fun I remember from my childhood alongside an abundance of vibrant cultural experiences, romantic opportunities and calming sceneries.

It’s the secluded luxury of Bora Bora or the Maldives without the hefty price tag; it’s the rugged beauty of Hawaii without the lengthy flight; it’s the adventure and fun of Bali without the raucousness. The locals are kind-hearted and friendly, always ready to greet you with a bula! and engage in genuine conversation; and the tropical weather means that it’s the perfect place to slow down and press pause on the daily grind.

In short, it’s the ideal destination that should immediately jump to the top of your travel wish list, especially if you’re on the hunt for a special location for a romantic getaway. And if you’re looking for the best resorts in Fiji for couples, look no further: Whether you’re honeymooning, travelling with kids or just seeking some quality time together in the sun, below, discover the romantic Fijian getaways that are sure to leave you relaxed, rejuvenated and more in love than ever.

Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay

Viti Levu

Travel just 40 minutes from the airport down the western coast of Fiji’s largest island, Viti Levu, and you’ll find yourself in a beautiful resort that brings Fiji’s signature friendly hospitality to a setting reminiscent of the likes of Tahiti or Bora Bora. The Marriott at Momi Bay is a secluded five-star getaway that allows you to swim in a pristine lagoon or your choice of three pools, dine at any of the six cafes, bistros, and restaurants, and immerse yourself in cultural activities and experiences.

The resort offers chic apartment-style accommodation overlooking the lagoon, or for a truly romantic experience you can opt for a lagoon-front, ocean-front or over-water bure — a traditional type of Fijian cabin that offers spacious, breezy living with high vaulted ceilings and private outdoor decks. You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to food, but for personal recommendations: The Goji Bar offers a breakfast buffet that surpasses any you’ve experienced before, and for lunch or dinner I can’t speak highly enough of Fish Bar. Its stunning views of Momi Bay and proximity to the infinity pool promises the best sunset experience the resort has to offer — relaxing there at golden hour, cocktail in hand, is one of the most memorable moments of my stay.

When it comes to experiences, there’s a full schedule of activities on offer each day — from Pilates and weaving to Fijian language classes and even crab racing. The on-site, award-winning Quan Spa is the perfect place to relax (I highly recommend the soothing hot stone massage) with couple’s massages on offer too. If you’d like something a little more active, watersports on offer including paddleboarding, jetskiing, kayaking, parasailing, and boat cruises.

Find out more (including all-inclusive options) and book your stay here.

Sheraton Resort & Spa, Tokoriki Island

Mamanuca Islands

Before visiting Sheraton Tokoriki, I had only experienced Fiji on its largest island, Viti Levu — and I had incorrectly assumed I had therefore experienced all the country has to offer. But visiting one of Fiji’s smaller islands is a totally unique experience, and one I’d highly recommend to anyone else who might think that seeing just one part of the 330 islands that make up the nation is enough. Tokoriki is an 88-hectare island in the Mamanucas, a volcanic archipelago to the west of Nadi. To get there, you can arrange a 15-minute seaplane or helicopter trip, or a scenic one-hour cruise from Port Denarau (20 minutes from the airport). There are just two separate resorts on the small island, so it feels incredibly exclusive and you feel completely whisked away from reality — the only downside is that no amount of time there will feel like enough.

For accommodation, you can choose from island or ocean views — if you’re celebrating a special occasion, I can confirm that the adults-only oceanfront guest rooms that come complete with their own private plunge pools are the ultimate romantic luxury. The staff couldn’t be friendlier, and have plenty of local knowledge to share — many hail from the neighbouring islands of Tavua and Yanuya, and are generous in sharing their stories and culture with visitors. You can also enhance your stay with cultural experiences from a Fijian buffet cooked in a lovo (an underground oven), to an unmissable kava ceremony (a welcoming experience in which you share a bowl of crushed kava root mixed with water, which creates a unique drink with a subtly relaxing effect). Dining options are plentiful, from the day-to-night Waitui House to the Indian casual-fine-dining establishment Curcuma.

Relax by the pool (complete with swim-up bar) or add a little excitement to your stay with the many activities on offer, including jetskiing, sailing, fishing, mini golf and local village trips. The Monuriki snorkelling trip is definitely worthwhile — you’ll sail out on a small boat to dive along the reefs of Tavua, Yanuya and Monuriki (the latter of which is where Castaway and Survivor were filmed), which are brimming with colourful coral and marine life. At sunset, be sure to make the walk up to the helipad, where you’re treated to the best views of the island. You can even book a private picnic there, complete with champagne and cheeseboard, scattered flowers (the perfect setting for a proposal, in case you were wondering).

Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort

Denarau Island

New couples and honeymooners aren’t the only ones who may want to enjoy a romantic getaway — so if you’re looking somewhere that offers family-friendly convenience alongside romantic indulgence, Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort is the perfect location. It’s the easiest resort to get to on this list, and the shortest trip from Nadi Airport — just a 20-minute drive — so you can skip straight to relaxation, even with the kids in tow. Despite being located alongside a handful of other resorts on the buzzy Denarau Island, it still successfully offers an intimate, romantic and relaxing experience for visitors so you can feel like you’re on the sequestered getaway of your dreams.

The newly renovated accommodations include ocean or garden-view rooms with private balconies or patios, or if you want a little extra space, opt for a suite. If you do plan on visiting with your children, but still want to have a little private time with your partner, the free on-site kid’s club means they won’t miss you for a moment — they’ll be too busy enjoying themselves in the playground or partaking in activities from face painting and basket making to fish feeding and Fijian song and dance lessons.

Meanwhile there’s plenty for you and your partner to enjoy: Treat yourself to a round of golf at the nearby Denarau Golf & Racquet Club, take a dip in one of the multiple pools (there’s adults-only ones available), or get a little adventurous with snorkelling, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, scuba diving, jet ski safaris and many more activities on offer. There are multiple restaurants on-site, or you can stay in bed and enjoy 24-hour room service — is there anything more indulgent?

Find out more (including all-inclusive options) and book your stay here.

12 of the best wine bars in Sydney for your next date night or catch-up

From Potts Point to Newtown, these are our favourite spots for impressive wine and delicious food.
By Dani Maher

INSTAGRAM / @BARLASALUT

WHAT MAKES the perfect wine bar? Is it the perfect balance of interior vibes — cosy, a little classy, but not too pretentious? Or maybe it’s the delightfully succinct menu that doesn’t leave you fraught with a serious case of decision paralysis — one that calls upon international influences with a distinctly local flavour. Naturally, a large part of the criteria includes a wine list that’s either adventurously expansive or expertly curated — that part goes almost without saying.

Whatever makes up your own personal criteria, there are surely a few things we can agree are necessary: Good wine, delicious morsels, and friendly service. So with that in mind, below, we round up a handful of our favourite wine bars in and around Sydney.

Best wine bars in Sydney 2023

Love, Tilly Devine

91 Crown Ln, Darlinghurst
INSTAGRAM / @LOVETILLYDEVINE
INSTAGRAM / @LOVETILLYDEVINE

Nestled in an otherwise dingy Darlinghurst alley, you’ll find one of the neighbourhood’s best wine bars. Love, Tilly Devine is named after the notorious 1920s crime boss, but enter its cosy space and you’ll find nothing but delicious food and drinks and warm service. Their menu showcases “small farmers, growers and makers who pride themselves on care for the land and quality produce”, which results in simple yet special meals — like a beautifully fresh pesto Genovese linguine, or zesty fried artichoke hearts. The minimalist menu is accompanied by a list of local and international wines available by the glass or bottle, with everything from South Australian shiraz to Southern Highlands orange wines — something to delight everyone.

Test your luck by strolling in, or book ahead to secure a seat. Find out more here.

Bar Lucia

5 Kellett St, Potts Point
KITTI GOULD
KITTI GOULD

Potts Point is brimming with beautiful venues, and Bar Lucia is the latest gem. The new wine and tapas bar brings a touch of Madrid to Sydney with its beautifully designed interiors and flavourful Spanish dishes. It’s equally suitable for your next friendly catchup or date night, with its cosy, romantic tables, bar seating and wine-shop-meets-bodega-meets-courtyard aesthetic. I speak from experience when I say it’s a place you can all too easily spend far too many hours at, enjoying the hospitality and comfort of the space. For food, expect small dishes that allow you to piece together a snack or a banquet, catering to vegetarians, pescatarians, carnivores and everyone in between — think cheesy, oozing croquettes; sea scallops on the half shell dripping with saffron butter; paper-thin slices of Jamon Iberico Bellota Puro; and anchovies with salsa Spinader, to name a few heroes. For drinks, choose from artful cocktails; wines by the glass (almost exclusively from female winemakers); or a list of over 50 wines by the bottle.

Make a reservation and find out more information here.

Continental Deli Bar Bistro

210 Australia St, Newtown

INSTAGRAM / @CONTINENTALDELI
INSTAGRAM / @CONTINENTALDELI

Perhaps you’ve seen Continental Deli on your Instagram, witnessing friends enjoy their signature “Mar-tinny” or “Can-hattan” cocktails-from-a-can — or perhaps you’re a newbie. Either way, if you haven’t made a visit to their Newtown home (or their smaller CBD location) yet, you’re missing out. If you’re serious about tinned fish, cold cuts, cheese and wine, there’s no better location. It’s casual yet cool enough to make it to your Instagram, and offers bookings or walk-ins — need we say more?

Find out more here.

Bar Copains

67 Albion St, Surry Hills

INSTAGRAM / @BARCOPAINS
INSTAGRAM / @BARCOPAINS

“Copains” is French for friends, and so Bar Copains is the perfect spot for a catch-up with your nearest and dearest. Their wine list is extensive — the cellar contains picks from the owners’ own wine collections, alongside drops from small producers and Australian staples — but they offer classic cocktails too (I’ve heard their martini is among the best in the city). And their food is impeccable, ranging from rich burgers and pastas to delicate tarts and freshly-baked focaccia. Follow their Instagram if you’re particularly serious about wine, so you can stay on top of their newest additions and offerings.

Head to their website to book or to find out more.

Dear Sainte Éloise

5/29 Orwell St, Potts Point

INSTAGRAM / @DEARSAINTEELOISE
INSTAGRAM / @DEARSAINTEELOISE

Back in Potts Point, discover Dear Sainte Éloise, the sister venue of Love, Tilly Devine and a self-described “place for wine and things to eat”. Its name reflects the simple pleasures of exactly that — wine and food — and is inspired by a George Orwell novel, in which the protagonist pleads, “Dear Sainte Éloise, if you exist, please send me some money. I don’t ask for much — just enough to buy some bread and a bottle of wine”. It’s a cosy, charming location, and its wine list celebrates bottles from across Australia and the wider world, complete with full descriptions of each varietal (a thoughtful inclusion for those who are amateurs rather than experts). Food is a delight, too, with menus changing with the seasons to celebrate fresh produce and new flavours, so you can return and find new delights to enjoy.

Make a booking or find out more information here.

Beau

52 Reservoir St, Surry Hills

BEAU
BEAU

A hop, skip and a jump away from its parent venue, the acclaimed NOMAD, Beau is an intimate restaurant split across two chic spaces. It falls somewhere between “restaurant” and “wine bar”, offering beautiful produce served in delicious dishes alongside classic bar snacks, as well as a strong line up of local and global wines with experimental and independent drops available on-tap.

Discover more information and book your visit here.

Bar Louise

135 Enmore Rd, Enmore

Behind one of Enmore Road’s most iconic façades you’ll find Bar Louise, a cool tapas spot from the minds behind Porteno, Humble Bakery and Bastardo. Everything is oh-so-photogenic, from the set-up to the dishes served on dainty antique-style plates. Sit downstairs at the bar or high tables, or settle in upstairs in the cosy but still bustling dining room. Choose your own adventure with the mix-and-match tapas dishes, with veggie, seafood and meat options galore; or if you’re there for a drink, choose from classy cocktails (the coffee negroni is a delight) or plenty of wines, from an extensive suite of sherries and vermouths (Spanish specialties) to local and international classics spanning over 10 pages.

Book your visit or find out more here.

La Salut

305 Cleveland St, Redfern

There’s something about Spanish cuisine that just pairs so well with a wine bar — and at La Salut, the flavour and rhythm of the Catalonia region is infused in the heart of Redfern. Expect snacks and share plates showcasing the peak of Australian produce cooked a la plancha (grilling with high temperatures and low smoking for a fun, vibrant experience). Exploring the breadth of Spanish wine with over 200 bottles, spotlighting newcomers and classics, the wine list is extensive, and features classic Spanish vermouths too.

Walk-ins are welcomed, but bookings are encouraged if you want to secure your seat, so do that here.

Poly

74-76 Commonwealth Street, Surry Hills

Located in the oh-so-trendy Paramount House Hotel, Poly is a walk-in wine bar by the same team that brings you the beloved Ester. Their wine list is extensive, described as “an assemblage of passionate winemakers producing remarkable wines and driven by organic and biodynamic principles”. The food menu is constantly changing, but regardless of what’s on offer, know you’ll be in for a treat — just scroll through their Instagram feed and your mouth is guaranteed to water within seconds.

Coogee Wine Room

222 Coogee Bay Road, Coogee

COOGEE WINE ROOM
COOGEE WINE ROOM

Many of Sydney’s best wine bars are nestled into little corners of the inner city, but Coogee Wine Room is a reminder that if you cast your net a little wider, there’s still beautiful spaces to find. A local space that aims to marry the charm of European wine bars with the casual friendliness of a beach-side venue, Coogee Wine Room offers a 500-bottle wine selection encompassing all major wine regions of the world, along with a succinct Mediterranean menu. It’s more spacious than your average wine bar too, spread across two levels with a variety of nooks and crannies to tuck yourself away in for the evening.

Make a booking or read more at their website.

Vini Divini

60 Carrington St, Sydney

VINI DIVINI

At Vini Divini, in the heart of the CBD, there is a wine wall over 1000 bottles strong, and a central bar that encourages people to come together to eat, drink and be merry. There’s also indoor and outdoor tables for you to sit and while away the hours catching up with friends or schmoozing on a date, enjoying the wines from over ten major regions. For food, expect Mediterranean: Antipasti including grilled artichokes and tinned fish; charcuterie and cheese boards; two pasta dishes if you’re after something heftier; and a few dessert choices, if you please.

Lokal

104 Fitzroy St, Surry Hills

Lokal is one of the newest wine bars in Sydney, and it offers down-to-earth, pocket-sized fun. It’s walk-in only, but make it inside and you’ll be treated to a food menu of bar snacks, cheese and charcuterie, and small plates; as well as a wine list heavy on the natural and orange varieties. Cocktails are minimalist — though the Salt and Vinegar Martini, created with salt harvested from Bondi Beach, sounds well worth a sip — and vibes are relaxed in the 20-person space, which is equal parts cosy and airy.

Marriott’s Fiji resorts are now the food destination of your dreams, with a little help from Matt Moran

Paddock to plate, meet reef to restaurant.
By Dani Maher

ALL IMAGES SUPPLIED

RESORTS, while luxurious, aren’t known first and foremost for their food offerings — but in the lush island nation of Fiji, renowned Australian chef Matt Moran has teamed up with Marriott Hotels & Resorts to prove otherwise.

Moran already has 11 dining venues to his name across New South Wales and Queensland — among them, the iconic Aria, Chiswick, Opera Bar and North Bondi Fish. Now, this new partnership has seen him expand into international waters, taking over the kitchens at two of Marriott’s Fijian destinations in March and adding an exciting new dish to the menu for foodies to enjoy. The lucky kitchens are at Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort and Marriott Momi Bay, a pair of tropical resorts where luxe dining experiences are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to holiday indulgence.

To celebrate the takeover, BAZAAR Australia headed to Fiji with Moran, three of his chefs from Aria and Opera Bar, and a group of Australian media for two pop-up dinner events on March 21 and 22 at the Sheraton’s Tatavu Grill & Bar and Momi Bay’s Fish Bar. For the occasions, we were treated to a three-course meal cooked by Moran himself and his team, featuring the exclusive new menu item.

On the opening night of the takeover, a balmy evening at Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort’s Tatavu, Moran described the enjoyable process of bringing his culinary language to Fijian flavours — a journey he considers when he creates any menu or dish in a new locale.

“Every venue has a narrative,” he told dinner guests — a group of international and local media dining alongside resort visitors. “I haven’t been to Fiji for a long time, and I really wanted to get out a little bit and see what else is around.”

Every VENUE has a NARRATIVE

Matt Moran brought his paddock-to-plate concept to Fiji
Visit Denarau Farm to experience local efforts for sustainable dining

The three-course menu we were offered saw fine dining meet local flavours in signature Moran style: Yellow-fin tuna caught by local spear-fishers perched atop pickled cucumber; roasted lamb loin served with scene-stealing condiments of zingy parsley-and-spinach mustard and umami-packed mushroom “ketchup”; an artfully deconstructed coconut panna cotta ingeniously crafted from various forms of the tropical staple. Earlier in the day we were treated to a visit to the nearby Denarau Island Farm, where we witnessed the resort’s efforts for sustainable, organic, locally-nurtured produce — a perfect match for Moran’s paddock-to-plate dining concept. Rows of endless mint, basil, Japanese eggplant, pawpaw, lemongrass, and plenty more vegetables, fruits and herbs are being grown in abundance by a small group of local farmers across five hectares of land to serve the neighbouring resorts. And this fresh produce was on display throughout the menu: Purple-and-green dark opal basil offering an earthy, spicy freshness; edible flowers scattered across cocktails, salads and desserts for visual intrigue.

“Fiji is such a popular destination among foodies, and it’s easy to see why,” Moran said following the launches. “With an abundance of crisp vegetables, tropical fruits, and the freshest line caught seafood it’s hard not to create spectacular dishes. It was great to experience Fiji, tour the resorts’ own gardens and deliver something extraordinary to their guests.”

For those who missed out on the launch event, worry not: Moran has left behind a memento of his stay so that you can still experience a taste of the exclusive menu when visiting Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort or Marriott Momi Bay. A new dish debuted during the events will remain on the menu for six months: A beautiful snapper ceviche, inspired by the national Fijian dish of Kokoda, in which freshly-caught fish is modestly marinated in miti, a tangy combination of lime juice, coconut milk, and chilli. The specialty dish, which will use Fiji’s freshly caught seafood will be delivered by each restaurants’ in-house Chefs until August 31, 2023. Think of it as a new iteration of Moran’s paddock to plate approach — reef to restaurant, perhaps.

Specifically, you’ll be able to find the dish at Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach’s Tatavu, where it combines with the location — an open-air venue with waterfront views championing traditional Fijian feet-in-the-sand dining — to create an unpretentious upscale dining experience. And if you’re after an even more luxe affair, head to Momi Bay’s Fish Bar, where the venue’s breathtaking evening views, perched on a hill beside the resort’s Sunset Infinity Pool, will leave you in awe.

FIJI is such a popular destination among FOODIES, and it’s EASY to see why

Moran’s new ceviche dish can be enjoyed at Tatavu and Fish Bar until August 31
Tatavu Bar & Grill at Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort

Neeraj Chadha, Marriott’s Multi Property Vice President Pacific Islands, expressed his delight and gratitude to Moran for bringing his talent and expertise to Fiji.

“We are thrilled that Matt has agreed to have the snapper ceviche on the menu at both Tatavu and Fish Bar Momi Bay for the next six months. Beyond this menu addition and in keeping with Marriott’s ongoing commitment to upskilling our teams and providing every opportunity possible, our teams are so excited to learn from a chef, the calibre of Matt Moran,” he said. “Matt created a memorable experience that aligned perfectly with our ethos and core values here at Marriott. We aim to deliver world-class hospitality and the dinner events did just that.”

But Moran’s new menu item is not the only drawcard for Marriott’s Fiji resorts.

The newly renovated Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort is just 20 minutes from Nadi Airport, offering family-friendly fun with a wide selection of leisure facilities, water sports, a kids club, and spacious rooms overlooking the ocean and gardens, with private balconies or patios. The award-winning Denarau Golf & Racquet Club is mere minutes away for those seeking a hole in one, and visits to Denarau Farm are available, where you can experience family-style meals cooked in the traditional Fijian lovo (underground oven) method.

For additional dining options to Tatavu, 28g is your on-site all-day cafe, restaurant and lobby bar offering light sweet and savoury treats alongside your requisite caffeine fix. Island 619 will fulfil your breakfast cravings with quite possibly the most extensive buffet available: There are sections for baked goods; cereals, porridges, granolas and fruits; hot breakfasts; omelette stations; deli goods; salads; self-serve or barista-made coffee; fresh juices; curries; fresh-cooked pizza breads and more. At Wet Edge, enjoy the new Asian menu: wontons, dumplings, noodles and stir fries to satisfy your lunch and dinner needs.

True indulgence at Marriott Momi Bay

Further south along the western coast Viti Levu (Fiji’s largest island), refined luxury brings a taste of the Maldives to a far more accessible location at Marriott Momi Bay. Accommodations include spacious apartments with balconies overlooking the serene lagoon, or traditional thatched roof bure that back onto the beach, the lagoon, or are suspended over the water for a truly immersive and romantic tropical experience.

Aside from the beautifully-located Fish Bar, you can dine buffet or à la carte at the in-and-outdoor Goji Bar from morning ’til night; experience down-to-earth dining with Fiji-style barbecue and comfort food at Voi Voi; unwind at the Mediterranean-style Lagoon House & Bar; or enjoy light bites and crafted cocktails at the relaxed Lagoon Lounge.

Full-day schedules offer every activity from morning Pilates to Fijian language lessons. There are two pools: The family-friendly lagoon pool with its swim-up bar; or the Sunset Infinity Pool (my personal preference, because you just can’t beat that view). Watersports are also available: snorkelling, jet skis, and paddle boarding, to name a few. The resort’s Quan Spa recently was awarded best spa among the Marriott group’s Asia-Pacific region, if you’re after a bit of extra rest and relaxation.

So for those who find themselves steering away from resorts, challenge your expectations, and be treated with divine food experiences courtesy of Marriott and Moran — alongside accommodations and experiences that will leave you wishing you could stay on Fiji time forever.

Totally unwind at these luxury health and wellness retreats in Australia

What better way to escape than with a lush local experience which treats the mind, body and soul?
By Hayley Peppin with Jessica Frost

AUSTRALIA IS KNOWN for its “work to live” culture, so naturally we have some of the best wellness experiences in the world. We not only have the opportunity to unwind in tranquil environments housed within the hustle and bustle of the city — but also those in set in far-reaching and remote communities. Seemingly, a new health hub is popping up in cities and regional centres everyday. While it’s perhaps considered trendy and a not-so-small luxury to regularly attend a private wellness club, one thing’s for certain. Me-time is not only valuable but transformative. You’ll notice the stress-relieving and glowing effects even after just 30-minutes.

Personally, I recently appreciated a self-care experience hosted at Melbourne’s inner-city oasis that is Willow Urban Retreat. Following a busy few weeks of work related travel, the few hours of movement, sweat, stillness and nourishment couldn’t have come at a better time — especially in a most welcoming and rejuvenating environment. For when you need a well-deserved break, intimate time with your partner or a little TLC, BAZAAR rounds up the best luxury health and wellness retreats in Australia.

Willow Urban Retreat

High Street, Armadale

While situated on the busy and affluent High Street in Armadale, Willow Urban Retreat is a total escape. I know from a personal and pleasureful experience. After a few weeks of travel and work-related events, as well as conceding FOMO defeat by still accepting social invitations, I began to feel the effects of burn-out. But after a fews days rest and almost three hours at Willow Urban organised on a Saturday morning, I was revived. All it took was a few hours to pause, reflect and consciously consider in a most relaxing and community-minded environment.

“Our community has gravitated towards like-minded individuals and togetherness,” Jeremy Bassat, Willow Urban Retreat, owner told Harper’s BAZAAR Australia/New Zealand of the general response among clients. “They have been inspired to learn, grow & explore together. They want to travel beyond the traditional confines of a day spa, yoga studio or café, and begin their own personal wellbeing journeys.”

SUPPLIED

I initially spoke with Bassat during my learnings of New Year’s anti-resolutions last year. At the time, Bassat told me his hub was designed to be a safe haven for “intuitive, mindful & heart-driven” connection for the mind, body and soul. “We offer the key pillars of wellness to support holistic lifestyle change,” he said. Said key pillars include an enlightening yoga studio, a calmative wellness spa and a deeply nourishing wholefoods cafe. My Willow detox began with a peaceful, beginner-style 8am Soft Flow yoga class — which also financially supported endometriosis.

As a curious, yet mostly indifferent, yogi (I’m starting to slowly ease into it), my instructor Annabelle Tudor couldn’t have been more encouraging and welcoming. She thoughtfully guided me throughout the class, even sharing a giggle to ease my anxiety, and then post-workout — spent time happily chatting with me. Suffice to say, I felt comfortable and appreciated despite my lack of yoga skills. It’s also worth noting, the minimalistic and soothing design of the light-filled, windowed studio is a huge motivation booster.

SUPPLIED

Following my hour-long class, I headed to Willow’s tantalising and sustainable cafe for some much-needed sustenance. The wholesome menu, which is seasonally updated (autumnal preferences are to be swapped shortly) features fan favourites such as the deeply aesthetic, yet delicious, refined sugar banana pancakes, a mango sticky rice pudding, chilli scramble and an unmissable Mexican bowl I’ve been told. Rest-assured, I’ll be returning at lunch time some day to try it.

I then finished my experience with a 45-minute infrared sauna, in a dedicated solo space. Upon entering, I was apprehensive as to how I could just sit still and sweat for nearly an hour with nothing to stimulate my brain. But honestly, that short social and screen time away proved to be the perfect stress-relieving antidote. I let go of all those ruminating thoughts and general concerns as I basked in total distraction-free bliss. The hi-tech sauna was also a godsend to my dehydrated and dull skin following plenty of air-time and copious amounts of alcohol.

“Willow Urban Retreat was created to provide the tools to inspires lifestyle change rather than the fleeting bliss of new year’s resolutions,” Bassat shared. “We are an urban oasis that offers a 360-degree approach to wellness, integrating the key pillars of health & wellbeing in one restorative sanctuary.”

And that’s simply it, a restorative sanctuary tucked away in Melbourne’s salubrious area of Malvern. Where some wellness hubs have an air of superiority and pretentiousness, making it intimidating for some to comfortably enter (as newbie to yoga, there was some initial trepidation on my part), I felt content, energised — and craving more regular Willow time.

Lagoons, swim-up bars and absolute beachfront: A luxury guide to Port Douglas

How to travel the jewel of Far North Queensland in style.
By Melissa Mason and Hayley Peppin

SHERATON PORT DOUGLAS / MARIOTT

If you’re looking for tropical heat in the middle of an Australian winter, Far North Queensland is where to head. While the southern states see temperatures dipping to single figures, the tropical north experiences perfect weather, cloudless skies, minimal humidity and yes – sun-drenched days just made for a dip in the pool.

If you’re after a romantic honeymoon or couples getaway, Port Douglas should top your list in the area. A relaxed town just an hour north of Cairns, it’s known for its world-class restaurants and luxury resorts. It’s also a convenient jump-point for adventuring through nearby must-do’s, such as the Daintree rainforest (a forty minute scenic drive where towering mountains loom on one side, and the turquoise ocean hugs the other) and the Great Barrier Reef.

Here, find our guide to the best luxury accommodation in the area — including the Sunshine State’s first-ever floating breakfast experience courtesy of the swish Sheraton Grand Mirage.

Where To Stay In Port Douglas

1 / Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort, Port Douglas

SUPPLIED

The first thing you will notice when you walk through the breeze-filled reception of Sheraton Grand Mirage is the salt-water lagoon pool. Weaving through most of the five-star resort, it’s not only a focal point but holiday highlight. You could easily spend your entire stay soaking up the sunshine and taking dips — or even meals — in different sections of the sprawling sparking pool. In a Sunshine State first, guests can now indulge in Queensland’s first-ever floating breakfast — which yes is enjoyed poolside.

Inspired by the relaxing and Instagram-worthy brunch trays found in Bali, The Maldives, Thailand and more; Sheraton is gifting Port Douglas visitors their own delicious and aesthetic pool spread. Flaky French pastries, açai bowls, succulent lobster with free-range scrambled eggs and more can now be enjoyed via floating wicker trays. Beverages are also included such as tea, coffee and/or freshly-squeezed orange juice. The experience is also exclusive to guests during the Sheraton Grand Mirage’s new ‘Float into Paradise’ stay. The package, starting from $690 per night, includes accommodation in the lush Studio Garden View Room and buffet breakfast in Feast for the remainder of their stay.

SUPPLIED

But aside from warm water dining, the on-site restaurant of Harrisons is another Port Douglas gem. As the most awarded restaurant in the area — it’s received a total of nine chefs hats, and landed a list on coveted lists like the Gourmet Traveller Food Guide and Delicious Magazine’s top 100 restaurants — guests will enjoy a most discerning tasting menu. Expect fine dining items such as foie gras mousse, spanner crab with wild scampi caviar, duck breast with sour cherry and shiitake; among other modern Australian dishes. In short, the Sheraton Grand Mirage is a tropical, and tantalising, experience best stayed to believe.

2 / Pullman Port Douglas Sea Temple Resort & Spa

port douglas hotels
INSTAGRAM / @pullmanportdouglas

A little out of town, nestled in the quiet rainforest, you’ll find the Pullman Port Douglas Sea Temple Resort and Spa. Don’t be afraid of the distance – the drive to town is one easy road, and only takes around ten minutes. The benefits are peace and quiet, plus a beach just steps away that often, you’ll have to yourself.

The main pool is lovely in the day, with its weaving moats that hug many of the ground floor rooms, allowing you to step straight out into the water. But at night, it’s spectacular. Fire-topped columns add romance, and what better way to enjoy the stars than floating on your back in warm waters?

For maximum luxury, book a Penthouse apartment. These feature a private rooftop where you can enjoy the sunset from your own Jacuzzi. Just add some champagne and you’ve got plans every night of your stay.

3 / Niramaya Villas & Spa

NIRAMAYA PORT DOUGLAS

One of the most expensive resorts in Port Douglas, Niramaya Villas & Spa is like being immersed in a tropical oasis. The 30m infinity edge pool is surrounded by palms and tropical plants, and the self-contained villas blur the interior to the exterior thanks to a series of pavilions connected with undercover walkways, internal water features and floor-to-ceiling folding doors.

4 / Peppers Beach Club

PEPPERS BEACH CLUB

There’s a Mediterranean influence at Peppers Beach Club, with its whitewashed columns and azure blue central pool. Rooms are modern and breezy, with Lagoon Deluxe Suites featuring private sun decks for instant pool access, and several suites with their own personal plunge pools. A great pick if you’re looking for a stylish base in Port Douglas.

Things to do in Port Douglas

Snorkel the Great Barrier Reef

With such close proximity to some of the best snorkelling spots on the Great Barrier Reef, booking a tour should be your first port of call. You can head down to the Port Douglas Superyacht Marina and find all the best tour operators in one place, which makes deciding where and when to cruise the World Heritage Listed reef easy.

We spent a day touring the Low Isles with Sailaway, which saw us swimming with turtles, enjoying the pure white sands of the islands, and snorkelling between coral gardens. Sailaway holds Advanced Eco Tourism accreditation and is one of five marine tourism operators participating in the Coral Nurture Program, which involves boosting live coral cover at reefs that have experienced a fall in cover.

Eat fresh, local seafood

The restaurants in Port Douglas are plentiful, and many focus on local produce and seafood. Two top picks are Zinc, a Modern Australian restaurant with a focus on fresh fare like grilled tiger prawns and barramundi fillet, and Seabean, a tapas spot with an incredible paella selection featuring local seafood.

Walk Four Mile Beach

While swimming is out of the question thanks to a long stinger season (dangerous jellyfish) and the possibility of crocodiles, Four Mile Beach, which stretches the length of Port Douglas, is a must-visit. The ideal time is sunrise, where you’ll see the pink-blue horizon slowly light up as the sun makes it way into the sky, but dusk is still a beautiful time to visit.

Watch the sun set at Rex Smeal Park

With its tall palm trees and uninterrupted views of the Coral Sea, Rex Smeal Park is the best spot for catching those spectacular Far North sunsets. Watch the sky turn from pink to orange, then head over to your dinner spot afterward. Another great place for spectacular views? Flagstaff Hill, which offers sweeping views of Four Mile Beach.

When is the best time to visit Port Douglas?

The high season in Port Douglas runs from Autumn until Spring, with temperatures hovering around 26 degrees celsius and humidity easing off. Basically, the best time to visit is when the weather is the coolest down south. Summer can still be enjoyable, but be prepared for higher temperatures averaging around 29 degrees celsius, and more chance of rain – Far North Queensland experiences monsoonal weather, and can be quite wet during summer.

How to get to Port Douglas

The easiest way to get to Port Douglas is to fly into Cairns, hire a car, and drive the hour north. Flights to Cairns are plentiful from most major cities in Australia. Queensland is a big state, so unless you’re planning on slowly road tripping up the coast, it’s best to avoid driving from the capital city of Brisbane – it’s a 19 hour trip, minimum.

Sun yourself in style at Queensland’s seven most sophisticated stays

Bask in all of the beauty Queensland has on offer — with a pińa colada in hand — sooner rather than later at these luxurious hotels.
By Hayley Peppin

Sunset drinks here, why not | INSTAGRAM / @qualiaresort

QUEENSLAND IS THE holiday destination state of Australia, seeing millions of international tourists annually. And it’s expected to ten-fold following recent news of Brisbane named as one of the greatest places in the world by Time Magazine. For context, it’s the only Australian city to make the annual list, which also includes Barcelona, Budapest and Vancouver this year. Dubbed by Time as the “sports and sun” city, Brisbane is continuing its $2.6 billion dollar development of the Queen’s Wharf (a new luxury hotel and dining destination precinct) as well preparing for the upcoming 2032 Olympics.

While it’s likely both projects were behind the reasoning for Brisbane attaining a coveted tourism spot, we all know there’s more to the sunny state than the Queensland capital. Hello, Gold Coast, Great Barrier Reef and Noosa. We’ve rounded up some of the chicest accomodation across Queensland to help you get your much-needed dose of Vitamin D — and sea — in Australia’s best city this year.

Reef Suites

Great Barrier Reef

While swimming in the Great Barrier Reef is certainly something to tick off the bucket list, why not also STAY there? Yes, sleep amongst the coral reefs and fishes at Australia’s only underwater accommodation. The experience at Reef Suites is limited to one-night, but it’s the kind of stay where you’ll want to spend every minute relishing in your marine surroundings. Take the journey for example. Due to Reef Suites’ oceanic location, a high-speed cruise will navigate you through the wondrous Whitsunday Islands (from Airlie Beach) to Hard Reef, before arriving at Reef World’s revamped pontoon — aka your all-inclusive accommodation.

After lunch, guests can snorkel, dive, swim or take a scenic helicopter to see the famous Heart Reef and then have the most epic sundown drink. Dinner is then delightfully enjoyed at a starlit long-table on the pontoon’s upper deck. After sleeping under the sea, your morning alarm bell will be a bale of turtles swimming past your floor-to-ceiling windows. Forget city vistas, because these suites truly give a whole new meaning to “room with a view.”

Palazzo Versace

Gold Coast

If you can’t be the glamazon that is Donatella, at least you can travel like her. The Palazzo Versace is one of a handful of Australia’s six-star hotel’s (yes, we didn’t know the rating went above five either), which perhaps explains why swathes of celebs like Johnny Depp, U2, Pink and Mariah Carey stayed there whilst on the Gold Coast. And it’s filled with all the gaudi and gold opulence you’d expect from the luxury fashion label.

Expect a palatial entrance, pillars, shiny floors and emblazoned Versace Medusa logos on every corner and pillow — just in case you forgot its namesake. But the 200-room resort boasts perhaps the most bodacious pool and surroundings on the sunny South Queensland Coast. Huge cabanas draped in floaty white sheer curtains are dotted along Palazzo Versace’s fountains and palm-fringed lagoon pool. Don’t worry — despite the resort’s mammoth size, outdoor waiters are always at the ready so you can enjoy your Aperol or espresso (it is Donatella’s favourite drink after all) in runway quick style.

Qualia

Hamilton Island

If you’re after a holiday where the most strenuous activity includes leaving bed for a pineapple juice by the pool, Qualia is the place for you. This high-end resort often features in lists for the world’s best (in fact it was the world’s best back in 2012) and it’s easy to understand why. Firstly, its location. Qualia sits on the northern tip of Hamilton Island and is juxtaposed between the resort’s beautifully-manicured gardens and 30 acres of native bushland, giving the environment a raw yet refined feel.

It’s just minutes from Hamilton Island’s main beach and high street with an assortment of trendy bars and fine diners. But as mentioned, you really don’t need to venture past Qualia’s stone walls to truly enjoy a tropical vacay. Whether you’re after total privacy or ambience, the resort has rooms with private plunge pools as well as a communal infinity pool. Guests can swimmingly take in views of the iridescent Coral Sea from the resort or literally immerse themselves in it. For the adventurous, Qualia has exclusive instructors who can give you scuba lessons and take you on a submarine adventure at the nearby Great Barrier Reef.

Luxury Rainforest Retreat

Noosa

The Sofitel may be Noosa’s most famous resort but if you want to strip back the glamour for a more intimate and sensual stay — the Luxury Rainforest Retreat is perhaps the place for you. Just a short stroll from the hustle and bustle of Hastings Street, the tropical property couldn’t be more far removed from its buzzy nearby neighbourhood. Situated in Little Cove, the modern three-level retreat is wedged between a literal sea of greens and blues with the National Park on one side and ocean on the other.

Despite its tropical setting, the design is less like a typical Queenslander and more reminiscent of the light and seamless Scandinavian architecture with driftwood flooring and natural stone surfaces. It sleeps up to eight guests with two master suites, two double rooms, a large lounge with an automated gas fireplace as well as a games and recreation room on the basement level. While the immaculate interior will provide much respite from the humidity of the Sunshine Coast, the outdoors space is the true gem of zen. Attached to a fully-equipped marble kitchen, retractable glass walls open out onto an expansive deck with lush forest views. Experience your own Nine Perfect Strangers sanctuary here — without the terrors of Masha.

W Brisbane

Brisbane

If you’re wanting to stay in Queensland’s capital, you have just one letter to remember — and that’s W. The BrisVegas branch of this international boutique hotel chain is conveniently located at the North Quay with swish and sweeping river views across to South Bank. Despite being slap bang in the CBD, W Brisbane doesn’t squeeze in its facilities and features. In fact, the cosmopolitan and quirky accommodation has the essence of a luxury resort.

The top floor plays host to the “WET Deck,” a tropical poolside oasis where guests can swim laps (if one so desires) or indulge in a splash-side cocktail. During peak summer season, expect a party atmosphere up here with DJ’s, bands and even catwalk models all turning up the heat. When it comes to working out, W Brisbane also has the most cutting-edge equipment courtesy of Technogym. With bright city vistas, the better-than-your-average gym space might actually incentivise you to get your squats on. And like most W’s, there are some pretty wonderful bars and restaurants inside including the Australia-wide, Instagram-favourite, “Three Blue Ducks.” Honestly, you won’t even need to head out for dinner.

Spicers Peak Lodge

Maryvale

If Spicers Peak teaches us anything — it’s that lodges aren’t exclusively for alpine regions. Considered a castle above the clouds, this impressive mountainous retreat is reminiscent of properties featured on Architectural Digest. It’s a trek to reach this treasure, however, as it hides behind a windy 12-kilometre dirt road. While you may feel like giving up given the slow speeds needed to safely travel up there, it’s well worth the journey.

Part of the stylish Spicers Retreats accommodation group, Peak Lodge sits on 8,000 acres of land with an infinity pool and spa, which neighbours on the World Heritage listed Main Range National Park. As it offers just 13 rooms, there’s an air of exclusivity amongst the dramatic blue-stone walls and wide timber floorboards. And despite Peak Lodge’s colossal size, its cozy furnishings — including a mezzanine library, reading nooks and open fireplaces provide humbling and homey comforts. Indulge in the vibes, views and meals (its intimate on-site restaurant has also achieved two Chef Hats) during all seasons.

Lizard Island Resort

Lizard Island

If you’re ever stranded on an island, pray that it’s this one. Lizard Island has just one resort (its namesake) and is every bit secluded, stylish and suave. Way up north near Cairns, guests must take an hour flight from the city to the small and remote island. But the short sky trip allows you to truly take in the scale and radiance of the reef before submerging yourself, if you so desire to scuba.

However, if you’re visiting for a spot of Vitamin D, Lizard Island gives you plenty of sun and privacy with 24 pristine powdery white beaches at your deserted disposal. Guests have an array of all-inclusive accommodation options, meaning you won’t have to frantically book those recreational activities or luxury treatments prior or during your stay. Aside from the scenery, Lizard Island’s other highlights include a beach-side sunset degustation dinner and guided heritage walks run by the Traditional Land Owners, Jiogurru of the Dingaal Aboriginal people. You’ll feel both refreshed and cultured by the end of your trip.
