IN 2016, Louis Vuitton (LV) joined forces with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in a powerful partnership dedicated to supporting vulnerable children worldwide. With a deep commitment to this cause, LV has embarked on a significant campaign spearheaded by House Ambassador Chloë Grace Moretz. Stepping into the limelight, Moretz showcases the latest addition to the Silver Lockit collection.

The new Silver Lockit design has been reimagined as a semi-beaded bracelet for 2023, and as seen on Moretz, it can be worn stacked or on its own. As with previous designs, the bracelet highlights the iconic miniature padlock that is artfully positioned between six silver beads. Much to jewellery connoisseurs, the bracelet comes in three cord colourways: red, black, and blue. To top it off, a chic titanium version with a black cord is also available.

Since 2016, LV has raised over USD 20 million for UNICEF. New versions of the Silver Lockit will continue to launch annually and contribute to the ongoing fundraising efforts.

Want to be a part of this initiative? The Silver Lockit Beads bracelet is now available for purchase in Louis Vuitton stores worldwide and for every bracelet sold, $150 is generously donated to UNICEF.

Join the movement, make a stylish statement, and support a cause that makes a difference.

Here’s Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, and Priyanka Chopra Looking Flawless Together

So much power in just one photo.
By Chelsey Sanchez

THREE OF THE WORLD’s most beautiful women just touched down in Venice.

Today, ZendayaAnne Hathaway, and Priyanka Chopra made their glamorous arrivals for the unveiling of Bulgari’s new high jewelry collection in Venice, Italy. The A-list stars—each of whom are brand ambassadors for the luxury jeweller—posed together on the red carpet for a photo that subsequently broke the Internet (cue the hordes of instantaneous “mother” posts).

One user commented, “I WILL NEVER SHUT UP ABOUT THIS OMG

“This is gonna be one of those iconic photos that we suddenly remember ten years later,” another wrote.

For the star-studded occasion, Zendaya upped the ante in a custom Richard Quinn creation. The black velvet dress featured a draped off-the-shoulder detail, a corseted bodice with buttons running down the centre, and a mermaid silhouette. To accessorise, she wore a diamond-encrusted snake Bulgari choker with yellow diamonds placed at the centre.

Hathaway wore a glitzy sequined Versace dress in a dazzling gold-to-silver ombré hue (she later added a matching hooded attachment during the show). The piece also included a thigh-high leg slit, allowing her to show off a pair of metallic silver platform heels. Hathaway’s dazzling Bulgari necklace featured a large diamond-encrusted chain with five pendants holding sparkling scarlet gems

Finally, Chopra attended the event in a pomegranate set based off of a look from Miss Sohee’s spring/summer 2023 couture collection. The set consisted of an off-the-shoulder long-sleeved crop top and a dramatic maxi skirt with ruched details at the cenrer, a sequinned flower adornment, and a train. Her Bulgari bling involved a diamond choker necklace with multicoloured gemstone pendants.

WHAT an extraordinary month it has been for Tiffany and Co. Following the reopening of its iconic Fifth Avenue landmark, the renowned jewellery house has unveiled its latest and most sensational high jewellery event yet — Diamonds and Wonders. This collection is an assemblage of precious diamonds and exquisite gemstones handpicked by the crème de la crème of gemologists. Earlier this year, the inaugural Diamonds and Wonders event premiered in Park City, Utah, drawing inspiration from the surrounding natural beauty. And now, to the delight of jewellery connoisseurs, this stunning showcase has arrived in Australia.

On May 8th, Sydneysiders were treated to an exclusive and coveted event at Tiffany’s flagship store in Sydney. The event showcased the exquisite Argyle Pink Diamonds: The Tiffany Collection, featuring 35 rare and exceptional pink diamonds and other bespoke high jewellery pieces. Vicki Reynolds, the Chief Gemmologist of Tiffany & Co. and the star of the show, provided guests with an insider’s view into the craftsmanship and precision of these one-off pieces. The event’s highlight was undoubtedly the unveiling of Dua Lipa’s 2023 Met Gala necklace, which boasts over 100 carats of diamond cut to the same exacting proportions as the iconic Tiffany diamond.

Take a look at some of the bespoke pieces on display — prepare to be mesmerised.

A royal jewellery expert rates the most opulent jewels at the Coronation

Splendour was aplenty at the King Charles III’s Coronation, but some royal jewellery beguiled the eyes just a little more than others.
By Shiva Singham and Caroline ‘Ralph’ Ralphsmith

MARK CUTHBERT | GETTY IMAGES

AFTER 70 YEARS, the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla was to prove magnificent, with its cacophony of ancient ritual, priceless regalia, pomp and circumstance and pure magic. In past coronations, the magnificence was further exaggerated by the abundance of royals, peers and peeresses; trailing velvet and fur-trimmed robes and bedecked in bejewelled family heirlooms. The heads of peeresses seemingly blinding from the gleam of brilliant tiaras and diadems crowning their equally shiny locks.

Albeit planned as a national event of grand importance, their majesties had opted for more modern ensembles during their Coronation spectacle. Formal day dress being the ordered requirement, except working members of the royal family who adorned attire appropriate to the most Senior Order to which they belonged — the Order of the Garter, Thistle or Royal Victorian Order.

The dress code though did not deter royal ladies and other attending female guests from decorating their chosen costumes with an iridescent display of jewels. We rate the best-on-ground regalia from least to most lavish — until that next beguiling day occurs with Prince William’s future Coronation.

Queen Anne-Marie of Greece

Recently widowed Queen Anne-Marie boasts a royal pedigree like none other. Born a Princess of Denmark, she is sister to the Queen of Denmark, aunt to the King of Spain and herself the Queen Consort of the Hellenes. Anne-Marie lived for many years during the Greek royal family’s exile in London and is a close friend to King Charles. William, the Prince of Wales, is godfather to her son Prince Philipos.  Anne-Marie’s jewels for the day included a pair of antique floral diamond cluster and pearl drop earrings, an antique corsage/tiara ornament and a Van Cleef and Arpels diamond swan brooch.

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden

Royal blue was the chosen hue for matched dress and pillbox hat by Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. The future queen and mother-of -wo accompanied her father, King Carl XVI Gustaf to the ceremony, her neck shimmering under the bright lights with an antique diamond rivière necklace, floral cluster earrings and the diamond encrusted badge of the Royal Family Decoration of King Carl XVI Gustaf thoughtfully pinned to her chest.

Queen Suthida of Thailand

The Queen Consort of Thailand stood out, not only for the resplendent nature of her national costume, but the sheer size of the jewels she wore. To coordinate her blue silk brocade Chut Thai, Suthida premiered her wearing of ‘Queen Sirikit,’ The Queen Mother’s magnificent Ceylon sapphire and diamond demi parure. The grand jewels feature Robin’s egg blue natural sapphires of the highest quality within diamond boarders.

Zara Tindall

Zara Tindall, the equestrian niece of the King, decorated her forget-me-not blue Laura Green coat-dress with a jewel of familial significance. The grand-scale yet delicate Belle Epoque ribbon and tassel diamond brooch had been her uncle’s gift to her mother, the Princess Royal for her first marriage to Captain Mark Phillips in 1973.

Duchess of Edinburgh

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh opted for a stunning pair of modern sapphire and diamond earrings and sapphire and diamond cluster bracelet to complete her regal ensemble. Sophie’s cream floor-length gown was a custom couture piece by Suzannah London and embroidered with British meadow flowers.

Queen Mathilde of Belgium

The Queen Consort of Belgium regaled in a pastel pink cape-back dress and Philip Treacy hat. Mathilde jewel trove, though not substantial by royal standards, features inherited and acquired pieces which she wears to great aplomb. Mathilde’s decorations were a multi-strand seed pearl and diamond choker, pearl drop earrings and an antique diamond butterfly brooch first debuted at a State Banquet in Denmark.

4

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands

Queen Maxima is another royal lady who enjoys frosting herself with diamonds. In emphasising its sparkle, Maxima chose a white ensemble from Dutch designer, Jan Taminiau, who also provided the dress for her husband, King Willem Alexander’s own inauguration.

Maxima’s chosen splendour was a pair of radiating large drop diamond earrings featuring detachable elements from the Dutch Royal family’s grandest piece, the Stuart Tiara. The tiara itself features the rare green Stuart diamond as well as other very large diamonds that can be transformed into pendants, earrings, and brooches.

Birgette, The Duchess of Gloucester

Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester is famed for both her vast inherited treasure trove as well as her bold — and brilliant — jewellery decisions. Glistening at Birgitte’s neck, amongst the voluminous folds of the Duchess’ GCVO (Knight/Dame Grand Cross) mantle was a large diamond rivière necklace. Antique diamond cluster earrings only added to her shine.

2

Queen Letizia of Spain

The Spanish Queen, known for her chic style, chose Carolina Herrera to provide her ruffle peplumed rose pink suit with embroidered neckline. Letizia accessorised with a chapeau au champignon and lavishly large diamond earrings from the Joyas a Pasar. The Joyas a Pasar are a substantial suite of diadem jewels that had once belonged to Queen Victoria Eugenie (Ena) of Spain, herself a granddaughter of Empress Queen Victoria.

As a special piece in her collection, Ena left careful instructions for the jewels to be handed down to be worn by subsequent Queens of Spain as opposed to being sold off. It’s described in Ena’s will as “un par de pendientes con un brillante grueso y brillantes alrededor” (a pair of earrings with a large diamond with a diamond border).

Catherine, Princess of Wales

Catherine, Princess of Wales glowed in her Alexander McQueen embroidered gown, mantle of the Royal Victorian Order. In a nod to her late mother-in-law, Catherine wore the Collingwood diamond and pearl earrings that had been amongst Diana’s favourite pieces and worn at her last Australian appearance.

All the times Princess Kate has worn a tiara through the years

The Princess of Wales has saved these special jewels for her biggest royal engagements.
By Sabrina park

CATHERINE, Princess of Wales, has worn her generous share of jewels during her time as a royal — but saved the tiara for only her most exclusive engagements.

Over the years, the senior royal has been seen wearing different meaningful tiaras at special royal occasions, namely at state banquets, annual diplomatic receptions, and on her wedding day. This weekend, she is expected to wear one to King Charles III’s coronation.

Per royal etiquette, the tiara can only be worn on evenings after 5 p.m — barring on wedding days — and is loaned to a royal for a lifetime; that royal is granted exclusive access to one or several tiaras that the monarch of the moment decides on.

Thanks to the late Queen Elizabeth II, who owned a total of 20 tiaras, Kate currently has three tiaras on loan: the Cartier Scroll, the Cambridge Lover’s Knot (also known as Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot), and the Lotus Flower. She has worn these three bejewelled headpieces for her most formal royal engagements, pairing them with equally glamorous gowns.

Ahead, see Princess Kate’s best tiara moments through the years.

Also known as the Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Tiara, the piece was originally commissioned by Queen Mary in the early 20th century to replicate the design of the 200-year-old Gothic Revival, which was owned by the monarch’s grandmother, Princess Augusta of Hesse.

It cannot be worn or removed without help — you’ll need someone to assist with the functional screws — making it something of a romantic gift, name aside. It certainly helps that you can have it engraved, too.

Is jewellery a good gift?

Jewellery is always a great gift to give. There’s something for everyone: for the minimalists, a simple yet elegant solid gold ring or fine chain necklace can be worn everyday with ease; for the statement makers, a bold pair of earrings or cuff bracelet with textural or jewelled elements makes for a standout piece; and for those in between.

Options abound for every personal aesthetic, so you’re bound to find something your loved ones will adore; and each time they wear their special piece, they’ll think of you.

Jewellery trends from the latest high fashion runways hint at bold statement pieces being the style of choice. Think larger-than-life hoops, chunky rings (and ring stacking galore), chokers, bursts of colour and statement chains.

That said, if you (or the person you’re buying for) are not one for a bold piece, there are still plenty of classic timeless styles to invest in. A simple quality piece of jewellery will never fail to impress: look for solid gold or 925 sterling silver that can be worn everyday with ease for a lifetime.

Shining examples: Meet the doyennes of Australian jewellery

These three women have remained at the top of their fields in antiques dealing, designing and making.
By Ruby Primrose Stephens

(L-R) Jewellery by Anne Schofield, Margot McKinney and Lola Greeno

The jewellery industry is an ever-changing landscape, yet these three women have remained at the top of their fields in antiques dealing, designing and making. Ahead, BAZAAR meets the doyennes of Australian jewellery.

Anne Schofield

Since 1970, the Sydney antique jewellery dealer and collector Anne Schofield has been at the helm of her shop, Anne Schofield Antiques, in Woollahra, and recently donated more than 100 pieces from her historic gemstone jewellery collection to the Powerhouse Museum — a substantial gift worth almost $2 million. Her love of jewellery was sparked in the 1960s when she moved to London and spent time getting to know the antique jewellery specialist dealers along Bond Street. Throughout her career, she has been passionate about inspiring and educating a new generation of jewellery enthusiasts through publications and exhibitions.

COURTESY ANNE SCHOFIELD

Harper’s BAZAAR: What inspired you to become an antique dealer?
Anne Schofield: I became very interested in the history of fashion, and I went to London soon after I graduated [my arts degree]. My time there inspired me to begin working in the antiques trade, particularly antique costume and jewellery. My mother was also a milliner, so I was brought up with clothes and adornments. I liked craft because I could see the way she made things.

HB: What do you think are the most important qualities that one should look for when acquiring and preserving antiques?
AS: I think the most important qualities are beauty and rarity. Something rare is very special. You must always check that it’s in perfect condition and has fine workmanship. These are all extremely important, especially for jewellery. Jewellery is a wearable thing, and it can easily be lost.

HB: How do you think the antiques industry has changed over the years, and what are some of the challenges today?
AS: There hasn’t been a great deal of knowledge around antique jewellery. Back in the ’70s, I used to take collections of jewellery to various capital cities and give talks. I went everywhere — Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth — and I would always take a collection of jewellery with me. I’d show the jewellery and educate people about it. It’s changed a lot because of the internet and the developments in photography. It’s extremely challenging these days because there’s less personal experience and it’s important to be able to handle the jewellery yourself. It’s the most personal of the applied arts.

HB: What legacy do you hope to leave behind?
AS: My legacy would be my two books and the gift to the Powerhouse, which will be on display at the 1001 Remarkable Objects exhibition in July. This will be the first time my jewellery collection will be on display.

Lola Greeno

Lola Greeno is an Indigenous shell artist, curator, educator and arts worker who is renowned for her intricate shell necklaces. Her artistry is deeply influenced by her tight-knit Tasmanian community, experiences of living on Cape Barren Island and most importantly, the bond she had with her mother.

COURTESY LOLA GREENO

HB: What inspired you to become a necklace maker and fibre artist?
Lola Greeno: I was inspired by my mother, and learnt that Tasmanian Aboriginal shell necklaces were a significant part of our women’s cultural practice. As I began to learn more, fibre art was the next most important practice that almost died out within our community. However, as part of my role as program officer for Arts Tasmania, we reviewed what plant fibres and what techniques women used to make plant fibre baskets. I was motivated from the interest we gained from working with our local Aboriginal women, tutoring workshops through a range of knowledge, and skills from plant fibres to dyeing and printing on fabrics.

HB: What is your most significant accomplishment?
LG: I consider my most significant accomplishment when I received the Red Ochre Award in 2019 for lifetime achievement in the arts and contributions. I am proud to have initiated a number of projects including: The Exhibition Tayenebe: Tasmanian Aboriginal women’s fibre work in 2008 and Kanalaritja: An Unbroken String in 2012.

HB: How has your artform changed over the years, and what are some of the biggest challenges facing artmakers today?
LG: Cultural pieces are being replaced by contemporary pieces printed in 3D plastic material. Is this fake art or fake culture?

HB: What legacy do you hope to leave behind?
LG: To encourage our next generations to continue their cultural practices in shells and in fibre. I would also like to see makers and the community study marine life to protect the shell beds, by offering scholarships to young people and creating new projects to educate our future scholars.

Margot McKinney

Margot McKinney was destined to become a jewellery designer. McKinney’s Jewellers, started by her great-grandfather in 1884, has been a stalwart and major retail success for 139 years. However, it is Margot who has elevated the family name through her eponymous brand and flagship store in Brisbane.

COURTESY MARGOT MCKINNEY

HB: Can you tell me a bit about your family background and how it has influenced your career as a luxury jewellery designer?
Margot McKinney: I’m very fortunate to come from a line of generations before me who were dynamic retailers. We were the largest sellers of Wedgwood, Royal Dalton, fine English china, silverware and crystal. It was a very large department store, but we always sold jewellery, and I think it was the jewellery that really piqued my interest at an early age. I remember when I was in my late teens, always wanting to dress a little bit differently from others and to wear jewellery that stood out. In the 1970s, the business shrunk in a physical sense and became just jewellery.

HB: Are any family heirlooms particularly meaningful to you?
MK: My grandmother and mother always wore a beautiful strand of pearls and beautiful earrings . I grew up with a great appreciation for pearls. [They’re] the only gems that come from a living organism — they are literally miracles of nature.

HB: What is so special, to you, about jewellery?
MK: When you walk into a room and you have beautiful jewellery on, it says something about you before you even utter a word. And it’s the ultimate symbol of love.

HB: What legacy do you hope to leave behind?
MK: I’m not thinking about legacy, I’m way too young [laughs]. I’m fourth generation in our family’s business, and I’m very proud to have the fifth generation coming through — my nephew Andrew McKinney Welch. He’s creative, he’s very hard-working. He’s created his own line called McKinney Welsh, which has just been accepted into Neiman Marcus, which is a great accolade. It’s going to be something to watch.

See inside Tiffany & Co’s newly-redesigned New York City landmark store

New York’s crown jewel has reopened its doors — with a new and improved interior design.
By Ruby Primrose Stephens

HAVING STOOD as one of New York City’s most iconic landmarks since 1940, it’s fair to say that Tiffany & Co.’s flagship store is the city’s crown jewel.

Since opening its doors over 80 years ago, the store has been emblematic of excellence; an icon that serves to reflect the qualities that make the jeweller so enduring. This month, the space has been reborn, with Tiffany & Co. announcing today that it will open the doors to its flagship again following a significant redesign.

The grand opening of Tiffany & Co. is a momentous occasion for the iconic jewellery brand. Located on 57th Street and Fifth Avenue, the store, now known as “The Landmark,” has undergone a comprehensive renovation, marking the first significant overhaul since its establishment in 1940.

The reopening reintroduces the world to “old and new, past and future, hidden and revealed treasures” of Tiffany & Co., showcasing never-before-seen jewels, custom artwork, and immersive displays. With a nod to its past, the refurbished facade with the Atlas statue and clock above the revolving doors pays homage to the building’s iconic original structure.

“The reopening of the iconic Fifth Avenue Landmark is a major milestone for our House. Symbolic of a new era for Tiffany & Co., the Landmark is much more than a jewellery store— it is a cultural hub with an exquisite showcase of architecture and superior hospitality, as well as cutting-edge art and design. It sets a new bar for luxury retail on a global scale,” said Anthony Ledru, President and Chief Executive Officer, Tiffany & Co.

Architect Peter Marino and the renowned Shohei Shigematsu-led OMA New York were the driving forces behind the store’s transformation. While Marino reimagined the interior architecture, Shigematsu spearheaded the renovation of the building’s core and circulation infrastructure, in addition to adding the new three-story volume above the existing building.

Ahead, take a peek inside the new era of “The Landmark”.

14 types of ear piercings, and everything else you need to know about them

Wanting to take the plunge and get your ears pierced, but not sure where to start? We’ve got the lowdown on everything you need to know, with a little help from the experts at SARAH & SEBASTIAN.
By Dani Maher

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER of earrings to transform an outfit. You need only look at the most chic of celebrities — Zoë Kravitz, Beyoncé, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Moss — to see the edge they can give to an ensemble, stepping things up and allowing an extra opportunity for bling.

More and more, multiple piercings are becoming something of a style statement — again, just look to the previously mentioned celebs for inspiration. If you’re interested in the idea of a constellation of studs, hoops, huggies and more peppered across your ear from cartilage to lobe, you’re going to need to know a little more detail about the various placements — as well as their healing times and suitability for your ear shape.

BAZAAR turned to Sarah Munro, creative director and co-founder of Australian jewellery label SARAH & SEBASTIAN, to shed a little light on the topic for your convenience. In addition to offering fine earrings to adorn yourself with, they offer piercing services at their Paddington and Melbourne City boutiques, as well as at the MECCA Flagship in Sydney.

“SARAH & SEBASTIAN piercing appointments are tailored uniquely to you, and our expert piercers provide advice throughout the service on every aspect from styling, to lifestyle considerations and aftercare,” explains Munro. “The most stylish piercings are piercings conducted safely and precisely, embellished with 18-karat gold fine internally threaded jewellery and precious stones.”

What is an ear piercing chart?

A chart depicting different types of ear piercings
PEXELS / BAZAAR AUSTRALIA

An ear piercing chart simply depicts all the different types of piercings you can get — where they’re located, and what they’re called. The most common piercings are lobe and cartilage piercings, but not every piercing studio will accommodate every type of piercing.

“At SARAH & SEBASTIAN, we can conduct most ear piercings including lobes, helix (outer ear cartilage), flat or conch (inner ear placements) and tragus (the small area of cartilage that partially covers your ear canal). Our piercers love to experiment with these piercings and create, constellations or snakebites where piercings are stacked closely together,” explains Munro. “We now also offer nose piercings and are looking to introduce daith piercings (a hoop that hugs the cartilage on the inside of your ear), rook piercings (the ridge of cartilage in your upper ear) and navel piercings towards the end of the year. We are perfectionists when it comes to our piercing jewellery and are currently working on specific jewellery for these placements.”

Some studios offer a service where they can map out a design or constellation of piercings for your ear. In the world of SARAH & SEBASTIAN, this is “Ear Alchemy”, which Munro describes as “the magical process of transformation through the combination of anatomy specific piercings and our 18-karat gold fine jewellery”.

“We use the phrase to refer to the styling aspect of our luxury piercing service which involves experimenting with your personal style and discovering your unique ear anatomy,” she adds.

What ear piercing should I get?

It’s all about personal preference, as well as the unique shape of your own ear — not every piercing or piercing arrangement will be suitable to your anatomy. If you’re after something simple, a lobe piercing is always a great place to start: they’re generally the least painful and have the quickest healing time.

If you’re happy to deal with the longer healing times that come with earrings around the cartilage areas of your ears — they do offer a beautiful pay-off — consider helix, conch, auricle and other such piercings. And if you’re after that stunning Zoë Kravitz effect with multiple planned out piercings, it’s best to go to the experts and curate your design together.

“In ‘Ear Alchemy’ appointments, our expert piercers will begin by examining your ears and detailing your unique anatomy,” says Munro. “They will then recommend ideal placements to complement the contours of your ears. This placement discussion considers the jewellery you might have your eye on, or pieces that will accentuate your new piercing. If you’re unsure of what piercing to get, that’s ok, our talented team of professional piercers will guide you and ensure you love your ‘Ear Alchemy’ project.”

What are the different types of ear piercings?

1

Lobe piercing

Healing time: 3—6 months

Lobe piercings are the most common ear piercing — they are situated in the soft and fleshy region of the ear called the lobule. Depending on the size and shape of your lobes — everyone’s are different! — you can get one or multiple piercings in this zone.

2

Helix piercing

Healing time: 6—12 months

You might have heard these colloquially referred to as “cartilage piercings” — but a helix piercing is one occurring on the upper outer cartilage of the ear, from the side as pictured to further along the top edge of the ear.

3

Conch piercing

Healing time: 6—12 months

The conch is the inner cup of your ear — that bit of cartilage that somewhat resembles a conch shell (that’s how it gets its name). It’s quite a versatile area for piercings, as you can get multiple studs, or a cuff like this that hugs around the ear.

4

Tragus piercing

Healing time: 12—18 months

The tragus piercing is located on the small bit of cartilage that partially covers your ear canal. It’s an ideal spot for mini studs or hoops.

5

Rook piercing

Healing time: 6—18 months

The rook piercing goes through the inner edge of the highest ridge on your ear. It’s a good spot for a hoop, or a bar during the healing process.

6

Daith piercing

Healing time: 6—18 months

The daith piercing occurs on the ridge below the rook, and hugs the cartilage on the inside of your ear.

7

High lobe piercing

Healing time: 3—6 months

Just as the name states, a high lobe piercing is located higher up than your standard lobe (but lower than the auricle, more on that below).

8

Industrial piercing

Healing time: 9—12 months

Industrial piercings are a striking look — they’re basically a straight barbell that connects one cartilage piercing to another on the upper part of the ear. Since they’re two piercings in one, they can be harder to heal.

9

Snug piercing

Healing time: 4—6 months

A snug piercing is located in that next ridge of cartilage inwards of the helix, between the helix and the inner conch.

10

Anti-tragus piercing

Healing time: 6—12 months

Located opposite the ear canal in the small curved area above your earlobe, and adjacent to the tragus, is the anti-tragus piercing. It’s a great spot for micro studs and hoops.

Close up on an ear with multiple piercings, the forward helix one is circled
INSTAGRAM / @SARAHANDSEBASTIAN

11

Forward helix piercing

Healing time: 4—6 months

The forward helix piercing is above the tragus, on the bit of your helix at the front of your ear. As a large-ish area, it’s suitable for multiple piercings.

Close up on an ear with multiple piercings, the flat one is circled
INSTAGRAM / @SARAHANDSEBASTIAN

12

Flat piercing

Healing time: 6—12 months

Not quite a rook and not quite a helix, the flat piercing — as the name implies — is located in the flat area of cartilage below the upper rim of the ear.

Close up on an ear with multiple piercings, a stud on the auricle is circled
INSTAGRAM / @SARAHANDSEBASTIAN

13

Auricle piercing

Healing time: 3—9 months

You can think of an auricle piercing as somewhere between a helix and a high lobe, and a step outwards from a snug. Auricles are placed in the fold between your helix (outer fold) and earlobe.

Close up on an ear with multiple piercings, a mini hoop going through two holes on the lobe is circled
INSTAGRAM / @MARIATASH

14

Orbital piercing

Healing time: 3—12 months (depending on location)

There’s a lot of incorrectly named orbital piercings out there — no, it’s not just a hoop going through your conch. An orbital piercing is a combination of two piercings connected by one hoop. They’re common on the lobe and auricle area, but can be placed just about anywhere on the ear with room for two piercings side-by-side.

Which ear piercings hurt the most?

While it depends on the amount of pain you can personally withstand, generally, lobe piercings hurt the least, and cartilage can be considered a little more painful.

“As everyone’s threshold for pain is different and can vary anatomically from ear to ear, it’s difficult to comment on what piercing is more painful than another,” says Munro.

“However generally, piercings conducted using needles are less painful and traumatic than those with a piercing gun and most people find that lobe piercings are more manageable to receive and look after.”

How long does it take for a pierced ear to heal?

It depends on the location of the piercing, as well as your own body’s healing processes. Depending on the location, you can expect a piercing to take anywhere between three to 18 months to fully heal, with lobe piercings being the quickest and cartilage taking the longest.

“Some piercings can take up to a year to heal, so the best way to achieve your desired look is to build it up over time,” Munro says.

How many piercings can I have in a single session?

Generally, it’s not recommended to get more than four piercings in a single sitting though — while a single piercing can be bearable, getting a lot in one go can be a bit of a strain on your pain tolerance and can cause a lot of swelling that would make the recovery process somewhat uncomfortable.

“Our piercers can perform up to three piercings per appointment, which is our limit to ensure your body isn’t overwhelmed and can support the healing process,” Munro says.
